PM5 / ErgData and Logbook - very little data?

Post by actx » December 28th, 2014, 12:45 pm

Hello - just got my rower with a PM5 and have it working with Ergdata on my iPhone, etc (with heart rate strap). I am surprised at the small amount of data actually logged in the online logbook. Basically, date, distance, time, avg 500m. . .I would have thought that there would be much more data (watts, heart rate over time and average, etc). Coming from the cycling world where even the most basic cycling computer captures a wide range of data over time for analysis, etc.. .this is surprising.

Are there settings I need to enable or something? Additional software? Especially would like to capture my hear rate for various intervals, etc and compare over time.

Thanks

Concept2 have told me there's a new logbook and ranking system in the pipeline. I'd expect to see that appear around the end of the '14/'15 season.

You get everything you're looking for from the C2 Utility.

I pair my Garmin FR210 and record the workout. Upload it to Trainingpeaks and have HR-Wattage-SPM available.

The Concept 2 Utility gives you 2 options. The first is recording it in the online log book. Then you can also put the data into a spread sheet and that will include HR, watts, and calories. The big lack is that it only gives the data for splits and totals. All the rest of the data collected by the monitor just goes to waste. The old Ergmonitor gives all of that (except HR} plus a lot of other data like work per stroke and time of drive - all for each individual stroke. Unfortunately, it only works with some ancient MS system.

The data is all there. Why on earth C2 doesn't let you get at it is beyond my comprehension. RP does show a little more of it and also provides distance/stroke averages, but the continuous HR and pace are available only as crummy graphs with the time in log form (!), not as decent tabular data. If you want to keep the graph, you have to do a screen shot at the end before going to the next piece and you can do only do 2 of the available graphs. As I remember, you could chose watts or calories instead of pace, but you have to set your choice at the start, and can get only one of the 3.

RP exported to Excel spreadsheet w/ Ron Burpee RowPro templates added will provide a good deal more in both spreadsheet and graph/chart format.

The tabulation for this row is an easy copy/paste from the Ron Burpee Excel templates for RowPro. Lot of info including %HRR, distance/stroke, and stroke power index. This row is also a PB for 30'. I'm happy that I paced this one such that the pressure relief valve on HR did NOT go off until the last 500m. I'm getting really good at taking minibreaks to avoiding cracking but I lack power, stamina, aerobic fitness and good looks.

For Watts graphed against HR, see jackarabit posts on p. 108 of "Brag about Personal Best" thread in Training subforum.

ACTX,

as others indicated, you need a RowPro licence to get all your data recorded and/or a Garmin device that is compatible with PM5 (and latest firmware). So far, I went the RowPro route plus SportTracks - there is a plugin to ST that let's you pull all data directly from RowPro and despite it not being updated for a number of years now, it does work as designed. All the details, wattage, SPM and HR are transported into ST. SPM is called Cadence in ST (cycling inheritance) but it is there and you can do various split analyses, custom formulae, you name it.

A new ranking system should pour balm on the waters of the virtual river resulting in better-smelling results. More recorded info in log woukd also be nice. jack

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and my first post was supposed to be almost the same as what this thread was about, so I'll continue here if that is ok.

I was also a bit frustrated with the lack of data I could extract or save from my workouts. I've tried erg data on the iPad, RowPro on the PC - which just crashes, or make my PM5 crash all the time. Have not yet managed to get a full traing session recorded... So not happy about these solutions. USB-logbook gives me even less information.

Finally I found the ability to connect an old Garmin 310XT forerunner to my PM5. And this device will collect data as speed and heart rate, break it up to intervals that I program on the pm5. All fine so far. But it will not save strokes, watt or any other metrics I was expecting. I've tried to search for what to expect and if someone has more information please let me know, or direct me to another part of the forum where I can ask this.

Oh, yes - it's a skierg, pm5 firmware 716 I believe.

Thanks
Stefan
