slides and sweat

I've got a pair of slides (only had them for 3 or 4 months now) but I wonder if anyone else has had problems with sweat getting into the slides, in the bottom of the groove next to where the wheels run, at the open ends, which just happens to be where a lot of sweat has a tendency to drop into them during long workouts when it's warm...
The amount of sweat isn't as much now that it's cooler, but I see that there are places where rust has developed already. Once I noticed this, I started using paper towels after workouts to soak up the sweat that accumulated there. Still, I wonder if that's expected behavior, or if there are suggestions for what should be done about it in order to keep from having to replace the slides due to rusting-out prematurely.
Rust-O-Leum?
