Model D in storage since Jul-05 needs some maintenance

Bought a Model D shortly before going abroad-- only has 150k meters usage. Lubricated the chain heavily before re-boxing it for (dry, climate controlled) storage. Brought it out of hibernation today: reassembled, lubed the chain, and checked the shock cord (it did not need adjustment). Cosmetically, it looks new.

Unfortunately the ERG makes a disconcerting grinding noise when used-- seems to come from the gear adjacent to the flywheel axle. Did some piece work and the noise does not appear to be going away. The handle retracts as expected during the recovery. Beyond the spinning flywheel, it never used to make any mechanical noises at all.

Any guidance as to what should be lubricated or replaced? Would like to minimize the risks of disassembly...

In the future, is there anything that should be done before storing an ERG for an extended period of time (e.g shock cords, precautionary lubrication, etc.)?

If you haven't done so, I'd take off the fan cage and make sure everything is clean and moving freely in there.

Also check the entire shock cord and cogwheel mechanisms to make sure all is lubed and turning easily as it should.

Symptom: Scraping noise from inside of front end beam.
Possible Cause: Shock cord or chain may be routed incorrectly or worn. Shock cord or chain may have jumped off pulley.
Remedy: Refer to your Model D Owner's Manual for proper routing of the shock cord and chain. Contact Concept2 if replacement parts are needed.

Opened it up and did some vacuuming, but I'm not sure how useful it was as there wasn't really any dust and things looked new. Verified that the shock cord is routed correctly.

All I can think is that maybe the bearings aren't as they should be. Any visual way to tell whether the bearings need replacement or lubrication? Would they be lubricated using the chain oil, or something else?

Apropos the first post, is there anything that should be done before storing an ERG for an extended period?

Did you check the chain pulleys and shock cord pulleys, to make sure they have a drop of lube (where they roll) and are moving freely with no noise.

Also, have you cleaned and lubed the chain and cogwheel.

The c2 chain oil is excellent.
