I just purchased a lightly used Model C and had a couple of quesions. Comparing it to the Model B we use at the fire station, my C seat seems to not travel as freely as the B. I cleaned the rail and the rollers look fine. Is there a way to adjust the rollers to loosen them or should I try mineral oil?

Secondly, the chain around the sprocket area seems to make more noise than the B at work. It's hard to describe but it's like a loud zipper type noise. I oiled it according to the instructions on the site, maybe I'll try a little more oil. A friend with a C says that the only sound he hears on his is the whirring of the flywheel.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hey 121, The B seats have a smaller roller and bearings than the C which might account for some of the difference. It might also be that the B is just really old, used and loose. The acceptable range of tightness on a C seat can range from so loose that it rolls down the slope of the rail on its own to needing a bit of force to move it. The bottom rollers can be moved into one of three positions to adjust the tightness. That said, it's also possible that the bearings in the rollers are going bad, but there's usually some ugly noises associated with that.
Regarding the chain noise, check inside the frame and make sure the chain and bungee are routed correctly, particularly the chain over the traveling pulley and idler pulley. There should be no twists or interference between the various moving parts. Diagrams of the return mechanism can be found in the service & support section of our website. The C chain noise should be the same or quieter than the B.

I have the seat axles in the holes that are farthest from the railing. This ensures that the seat moves freely with no binding. I keep a few drops of mineral oil on the railing, and then wipe off any dust with a paper towel or a napkin. This keeps the railing and seat rollers in top working condition.

I've had a model B since 1993 and a model C the last two years.

There are more than 24 million meters on the B and the rollers are still rolling along great.

The chain on the model C always makes more noise than the B, the same zipper type noise you described. There is probably nothing you can do about that except maybe install the quiet kit. Those who have done this can comment on whether it helps.

I saw a video of c2jonw on a model C and it was making that same zipper noise.

C2 has the quiet kit. Just give them a call.

I think it's around $55, and entails taking the cage apart, changing the cogwheel and axle to a different sized one with urethane dampers, installing a different chain, and putting everything back together which takes a couple of hours.

I have it and also have the retrofitted PM3 for the C. Both are great values for the money. The C is much quieter and it amounts to a complete overhaul of the drive train

Thanks for the input BobD, I tried e-mailing C2 to get info on the Quiet Kit but haven't heard back yet. Anyone have an idea where I could purchase the Kit and a new chain?

Craig the kit includes a new chain, new dampened chain sprocket, and new idler pulleys. I bought mine direct from C2. Give them a call on their 0800 number. I also have the D handle
