Frayed Shock Cord

I have a Model D that recently began running "rough" on the return. After some inspection I clearly have an issue with the shock cord. In one small section the cord has begun to fray and the rubber core is visible. Has anyone else run across this problem? What is the cause? I also have a question about the installation of the cords. On one side the cord actually crosses itself (twisted?). Is this normal or a problem from when they were first installed? The cord does not cross on the other side.
I know the cord will need to be replaced but have concerns that there is another underlying problem that needs to be resolved. BTW, I assume that continuing to use the erg is out of the question, or is it?
