Back in October 2005 I bought a new "Wearlink transmitter and strap, Polar" to replace a 10 year old HRM which had died. The HRM has suddenly stopped working altogether. When I bought it as a replacement I did not buy a new receiver as he original seemed to be working fine. Could that part now need replacement?

Suggestions will be welcome

You need to find another erg/PM3 with a HR interface and another chest strap. Then you can try the following tests:

1. your wearlink, your HR interface, your PM3.
2. alternative chest strap, your HR interface, your PM3
3. your wearlink, alternative HR I, your PM3
4. alternative chest strap, alternative HR I, your PM3
5. your wearlink, your HR interface, alternative PM3
6. alternative chest strap, your HR interface, alternative PM3
7. your wearlink, alternative HR I, alternative PM3
8. alternative chest strap, alternative HR I, alternative PM3

If you take your PM3 into a local gym the you can do those tests with your PM3 (connect it instead of the one on the erg, place it carefully on the floor).

Get the results of those tests eight and you'll be able to see which of the three components causes the failure.
