PM5 ate my workout

Post by Rowan McSheen » July 4th, 2025, 6:43 am

I finished my workout and connected the erg to the laptop with the USB cable, and went to upload the workout via the C2 utility. As it was reading the logbook I realised I hadn't pressed Menu to save the session and return to the main screen so I did that.

The utility told me the logbook had errors and needed to be rewritten so I pressed OK. When it all came back the workout wasn't there.

Is it gone forever or is there a way of recovering it?

As an aside, I get this logbook errors message about once every couple of weeks or so. Could the PM5 be a little unwell, I wonder.

Do you always press the menu button when working with Ergdata? Or do you just do stuff on your phone?

Once it's gone, it's gone forever.

If you press the menu button it should get recorded in the PM5 memory, if nothing else. You can then, at least, enter it manually at https://log.concept2.com if Ergdata fails.

look in the history in the pm5. it might be there. if so make a manual entry for your log. The pm5 history gives you what the c2 utility would have uploaded, you just have to type it.

When you eventually change to using a phone/tablet with ergdata to talk bluetooth to the pm5 you'll wish you did it sooner. You can see much more data and it's much less hassle than using c2 utility to move workouts.

Suggest you send a note to C2 with a cut/paste of the error message and let them tell you next steps. C2 utility is great for last-ditch-resort actions, but is not used that often so is not as field tested as ergdata.

info@concept2.com Expect longer than usual response given US July 4 holiday and typical vacations. Normally people on the forum report responses direct from devp in 2 work days or so.

(FWIW I'd suspect the "C2 utility to Log" connection as the root of the logbook error message and look at re-booting laptop and verifying strong internet connection rather than focus on pm5. )

Thank you. I'll dive into the PM5 history next time I use the machine.

I don't use a phone or Ergdata etc, btw, just a USB cable to the laptop.

If I can't find it in the history then I guess it's gone forever and I'll just to work a bit longer till I have enough to claim that C2 kitbag :(

Understood. But try Ergdata. If you can make C2 utility mostly work then making Ergdata work is trivial.

Ergdata records a lot of data that the PM5 displays then discards. It also records everything on a per-stroke basis so that you can look at graphs with every stroke rather than just getting whatever HR and SPM you had at the end of an interval or workout averages for splits/wattage, etc. The display of the additional data is integrated very well into your C2 log.

p_b82 (Peter C) on this forum has a public log so I borrowed one of his entries to give you an example. https://log.concept2.com/profile/1627958/log/103384631

The graphs are nice to have. You can see his rising heartrate and his constant SPM and split on this 10K.

I’ve also had issues using just the PM5 and C2 utility. Didn’t realize ErgData captured that much detail per stroke. Might give it a try to avoid the sync errors. Appreciate the example log too.

I looked in the history but the workout was gone. Oh well. Going forward I'll be sure to hit Menu before doing anything else. Ergdata looks interesting but it's overkill for me, I row for health and fitness. That said, I will take a closer look if the PM5 eats any more of my sessions.

Really, it is so easy. If you start using it, you will never go back to cable and pc to transfer your workouts. You don't need to use all metrics and data provided by ergdata, you still can just row. After finishing your session, you press menu and wait for ergdata to store the session, which happens automatically, as it is already connected to your logbook (after you gave login data to the app once). No cables, no pc, no other tools. You really should try it :)

I only use ergdata (and ergzone on occasion) for informal tracing - if you are manually using the c2 app and connecting your laptop - then ergdata is so much simpler / lot less effort. (and I reckon more reliable nowadays).

If you don' want to see the additional metrics while rowing - setup the workout - send it to the pm5 and put the phone out of sight - at the end just disconnect your sessions etc.
