USB stick and ergData.app Order of operations for pm5?

I use a HR monitor while rowing. I read on concept.com that a user can save their HR monitor by keeping a USB in the PM5. I did that and “saved the HR to my user name (this took multiple attempts to insert and remove the USB stick - my user name never popped up).

Issue seems to be if I connect to the PM5 with ergData.app first the USB stick never shows my user name and the HR monitor never auto syncs.

What is the correct way to use a HR monitor without having to select it from the PM5 every time while using ergData?

Oh… if I turn on the PM5 with the USB stick already inserted my user name never appears, so the HR monitor doesn’t sync.

Please realise that newer USB sticks are too power hungry for the PM5, so it might not become active. Older (USB 2) devices will typically work.

If you are using ergdata no USB stick is needed. Connect ergdata, connect your HRM to the PM5 and ErgData will detect it and ask you to save it as default. Now every time you connect ergdata, it will connect the HRM for you automatically.

With ErgData I (which is now obsolete), you could not use a memory card or USB stick.

Haven't tried with the new ErgData. It is unnecessary. And if ErgData fails, the PM5 will store your workout in its internal memory. You can transfer that to the logbook with a PC, Concept2 Utility, and a printer cable.

For a single workout, in case ergdata fails, I would use the web interface and verification code and do it manually. Stroke data is lost anyway and the splits are not that important for a single session, if it's not a PB and you want to the specific splits for comparison, when attacked again.

Sometime back I was told by C2 Tech not to use a USB stick and Ergdata at the same time. Works sometimes but can lead to contention issues of where results are written to and stuff gets lost. Basically its not officially supported even though it works sometimes. Ergdata alone captures everything automatically and will synch to the C2 Log automatically if internet connected. I still occasionally use my USB stick as a backup for my sessions (move them from the PM5 in a separate action). A waste of time really given my log ... but I'm still smarting from losing all my training records from the old UK forum/blog when it was abandoned without warning a decade or so ago.

It never asked me to save it unless I had a usb stick inserted. Every time for two months now I have had to manually select the HRM. It’s a Polar 10.

Here is what their documentation says:
Before the Performance Monitor (PM) can detect your heart rate from a chest belt, you need to pair the ID of the chest belt with your PM. If you use a LogCard or USB flash drive with your PM, your chest belt ID can be saved to that device, so you should only have to perform this pairing once. If you do not use a LogCard or USB flash drive with your PM, you will need to repeat the pairing process every time you row or ski.

Soetimes? I've been using a USB stick next to ErgData for over three years now, daily. Never had an issue. Saved some session data though, because ErgData sometimes messes up data sync between my phone and the logbook.

The same site you linked says this:
Pairing While Connected to the ErgData Application
Put the chest belt on, and press any button on the Performance Monitor (PM) to power it up.
Connect ErgData to the PM.
Select Connect Heart Rate. Within 5-10 seconds, the PM will list identification information for any chest belt it finds. This information may include brand or model information and/or and ID number.
Choose the ID that corresponds to your chest belt. (If you are unsure, check the chest belt ID, which is typically listed on the back of the belt.)
Select Confirm Selection.
On the ErgData app, select Yes to, "Remember Heart Rate Belt?"
This saves your chest belt’s ID to your ErgData application so that the PM automatically detects your chest belt in the future.

Yep. I too had a long period where it worked well... until it didn't. When I asked for help - that was the response from C2. Looks like youve been lucky so far - hopefully that will continue.
