Looking to buy PM2, 3, 4, 5

Post by jdhtwo » June 12th, 2024, 3:33 pm

I have a Model C with a PM2. The PM2 appears to have died completely. Does anyone have a PM2, 3, 4, or 5 for sale? (I know I can purchase a PM5 new from Concept2.)

Thanks,
jdhtwo

Where in the world are you located?
How much do you have to spend?

If you Model C has been looked after and you are using it more than 3 times a week then just buy a brand new 4th Gen PM5 and configure it in the software with a few button presses to run on the Model C.

$185 for a new PM5 from the Concept2 website seems pretty steep. I was able to find a PM4 on eBay for $80. Is there something I'm missing that would make the additional $105 worthwhile?

Depends on whether its a 1st or 2nd gen PM4. I wouldn't even buy a first Gen now its too old and they stopped updating the firmware so far back it no longer works with the latest ANT+ HR straps like the Garmin RUN.

The PM4 has pretty poor connectivity you cannot easily use it with ErgData as it has no wireless connectivity to your smartphone so you cannot do the free online rowing on the loop.

Depends on what you want to do now or how things change in the future. The PM4 has had its day really.

There is a clear divide between people who want the convenience of Ergdata etc. who choose to pay the premium for the PM5, while us dinosaurs continue to manually process the data using the earlier PMs. OP has an option to upgrade and join the former, but has clearly been in the latter to date. But that is from the perspective of someone who uses his smart phone primarily to make calls and texts!

Absolutely agree on this.
If no data processing is wanted or fuzzing around with the PM4 storing mechanisms and reading/transferring data using the C2 utility is fine for someone, no reason to have a PM5.
But if you like to access your data and do some tricks on them, the PM5 and ErgData lets you do the job so much easier, I would recommend to go for PM5 in any case.

Also,

A few years ago ergdata worked with any PM 2-5 using a printer cable. That support has been dropped and indeed no longer works even on a PM5.

PM4 does have bluetooth, however the PM4 is no longer supported by Ergdata even over BTLE.
The new support statement for ergdata is PM5 only. Ergdata: "Technical Specifications
Compatible with the PM5. PM3 and PM4 users can retrofit a PM5 to their existing machine. " https://www.concept2.com/service/software/ergdata

If you plan to use the Concept2 log with an older PM then plan on using a 3rd party app to forward your data from the PM to the log or you can manually enter the data and miss all the per-stroke information heart rate correlation etc. As stated above, this may or may not be a problem for you. The free swag from C2 (shirts, rowing shorts, etc) at major mileage milestones based on your C2 log is nice to get. Comparing year to year is also interesting for some people.

I have a used PM3 monitor w mounting arm. Approximately 20 years old. Works fine, just updated with a PM5. Happy to give it away to anyone who wants to pay for shipping. I am in California.

Last week I aquired a nice Model C Rower, so far so good. Atriest, if you still have that PM3 monitor and arm I could use it.
