My splits are higher than they should be

Hello, I have noticed that my splits on my personal erg are higher than they are on other ergs such as my school's ergs.

I usually steady state at 2:05-2:10 easily at school but have trouble getting past 2:10 at home with the same pressure. I recently did multiple 1ks on the same day on a school erg with a 1:45 average split on most of them with no prep at about a 30 stroke rate, and today I tried to do a 1k and I couldn't get past 1:47 with a 32-34 stroke rate and a lot more pressure.

I think it's a chain issue because it doesn't feel too smooth when taking a new stroke, but I already oiled the chain and changed the pulleys, so I have no idea how fix this. I know my drag factor is the same as any other erg I use, and it's not because I'm tired because I've had this issue for months.

Anyone know what I can try to fix this?

Welcome to the forum. : )

Just out of curiosity, have you been monitoring your HR to see how it compares for the different workouts?

I know that when I row (or ride a bike) with other people I'm significantly more motivated and tend to be faster than I am when I'm alone. Maybe your HR can give you a more objective assessment of how hard you truly are working.

Good Luck

Thanks for your response!

You are correct and I’ll try to get a heart rate monitor soon. However, Ive been wanting to do a 2k for a while now and I can’t do that with the state its in right now. The split difference doesnt really matter too much on steady state because i just do it as a work out, but for a 2k or any other race piece is actual number matters heavily so that I know what speed im actually going and to know if I improved.

That being said, I really don’t know whats causing my issue, and I don’t wanna buy a new erg or buy every single replacement part. I think the issue is in the chain area because it doesn’t feel that smooth when i pull.

No two work pieces need ever be the same; length, rating, warmup, style, adjustments, local temp air n light, time of day, fatigue, recovery since last work can all vary. Just do something different every time and learn from it. Such as the WODs.

In any case what counts is only the stroke itself, so keep that under control: we can on a real ergometer, and it's the main reason for using a C2. Two hours a week of that is enough. Any more, not only won't be the same, but must not.

The 2015 model D that I got last August also has greater resistance (and noise) than normal,
that's coming from the sprockets and chain. The sprockets especially are quite loud on the drive.
