Model B sensor and PM1 testing and repair

Hello all,
I found some posts in the forum on PM3 sensor wire and pickup repair, but scrubbing through the forum I couldn't find much information on Model B sensor and wire repair or PM1 monitor repair.
My sensor wire is broken, and I would like to reattach it with some solder. Is there a quick way to test if the sensor is picking up a good signal, i.e. what would I be looking for with a multimeter. I could also get a cheap oscilloscope to check the signal when the wheel is rotating. What would be good signal levels? Looking at the connector it seems there should only two conductors -- is it just a simple coil at the sensor?
Also I have no idea whether my PM1 is working or not, I found found some instructions on cleaning up the breadboard at https://www.concept2.com/service/monitors/pm1/manuals
If anyone has any other suggestions/experience on bringing up/resuscitating a PM1 and would be willing to share that would be greatly appreciated.
