Keeping an erg outside

Post by margeypan » March 15th, 2023, 9:53 pm

I have been keeping my model D rower outside, covered, in Los Angeles. It has been raining a lot here but it hasn't been wet under the cover. My problem is that the PM5 display has stopped working. I replaced the batteries but that wasn't the issue. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong or how to fix it? I assume I can replace the whole PM5 but I'd rather try to fix it. I'll also try to figure out how to store the rower inside in the future.

Can’t give much direct insight other than to say that moisture in the form of humidity in the air is likely not good for the electronics in the PM5. I know humidity and Los Angeles are not generally a thing, but when you have something covered in the rain, the conditions are conducive to that situation.

I don't have the issue with humidity, but have often the rower outside when it's really cold. For such days, I take the monitor off. In order to make this really easy, I have bought a new longer screw and handtwist bolt, which I put on and off within 2 minutes (of course the cable needs to be connected on and off too).

Maybe this is a solution for you: rower outside, monitor inside.

If for any reason your PM is at a temperature lower than the local dewpoint at the time, it will get wet. If I hate to see that evening sun go down, it's because I sleep out, so get cold at night.
