Is my PM4 broken?

When I start to row to power up my indoor rower it says that there is either no battery present or it is empty. The batteries which were in the device were just simple D batteries, not rechargeable ones. So I tried replacing them with newly bought batteries but I still got this message.

I tried connecting it to my PC to maybe perform a firmware update since the device was running version 22. The Concept 2 Utility program detects there is a device connected when I try to perform an update but when I click on the "Install V29" button to update the firmware it then gives an error saying "Unable to update. Lost connection to PM". Afterwards it does go to the update screen but it is simply stuck on "Checking firmware versions and validating files".

Does anyone know if this is fixable and if so, how?

For now I can keep rowing while it is attached to my PC but I do lose all memory whenever I break the connection.

try factory reset. press change units and change display buttons together while pinning the reset button in the back.

Get it working and update to V29. It's a first gen PM4 so it's pretty old.

Never really go to the bottom of that no battery fault. You can press other buttons before it shuts down.

Try Alkaline batteries

I tried the factory reset but I keep having the same problem when then trying to update the firmware and the no battery message remains as well.

I also noticed on the main screen of the Concept 2 Utility program that when I connect the device without even trying to update the firmware, the program only shows the device to be connected for a brief second before it disconnects.

I managed to update the firmware by holding the display and units buttons while connecting the device to my laptop. I noticed that when that happened the device would show up as connected slightly longer in the Concept 2 Utility program so I could quickly go to the firmware update settings and start an update. However, the no battery issue still persists. If I stop rowing for a little while the device will simply turn off. So I don't have enough time to setup my workout.

Just get the spare 5V phone charger you probably already have and a long printer USB cable and permanently supply power to the monitor from the mains.

Try taking the batteries out overnight and fit another different set of brand new Alkaline batteries.

I run the monitors on a DC power supply on my test bench and its very weird that that message comes up with some monitors but almost never comes up with a decent set of batteries in it.

Never got to the bottom of that fault, its like its not hardware related its so random.

Factory default reset it again now it has V29.

If you cannot live with it buy a new PM5. The monitor now turns off very fast without a key press on the latest firmware, its like 30 seconds.
