Strange Monitor Behavior After Refurb

Post by MojoGene » March 24th, 2021, 9:07 pm

Just finished doing a major overhaul of my Model C with PM5 monitor, chain, cord, chain axle sprocket replacement kit. After getting everything together, I had some trouble getting the sensor pickup to work, so I replaced that too. At this point, everything seems to be working mechanically, but the PM5 is not recording the sensor data correctly. I need to rev the flywheel to very high speed before the monitor pickups activity and then as soon as there is no more acceleration on the flywheel the monitor stops recording. (On the ErgData app, I was getting the "Have you finished your workout" message on every stroke.) Oddly, the drag factor was showing between 275 and 622 depending on the damper setting. (The PM5 is correctly set for "Model C" and has the latest firmware.)

I am at a complete loss to explain this and would welcome any suggestions.

Just an update FWIW.

I took out the new chain axle/sprocket and reinstalled it (a couple of times). No joy. So, I reinstalled the old chain axle/sprocket and everything works fine.

The tolerances between the sensor pickup and the flywheel magnets seem to be VERY critical. Grossly, there is no observable difference between the dimensions on the new and old chain axle/sprocket assembly, but in the machine there is probably a hairsbreadth of a difference that explains the problem.

You need to configure the PM5 to a Model C rower.

I also recommend you get the latest firmware as it makes that easier without having to go into a hidden menu.

Carl:

Thanks for the reply. The PM5 is new with the latest firmware, so that was not the issue.

Still can't fully explain exactly what the problem was, but after discussing the issue with tech support (Josh) there was some thought that it might be the old magnets. Josh offered to send new magnets, but I wound up replacing the flywheel since the old one had a balancing clip knocked off at some point and had a slight wobble in it. In any event, putting everything back together with the new flywheel removed all the sensor issues and the Model C is now purring along like brand new. Weak magnets? Who knows? Bottom line: all is now well.

I would guess that it was a magnet problem. With your new flywheel, it would be a good idea to mark the weights & locations so you could re-install them should they become dislodged.
