Best training routine for 2k

Hi all.

Just hopped on the erg last night for my first 2k test in over 2 years. Managed a 6.52. When I was at my peak 2 years back I managed a 5:58:8(still my greatest achievement :D ). Just looking for some guidance on a what's the best way to approach getting back close to that time. Training prior to last night's test was zero. I was never professionally trained before, just hammered away myself so I thought I might be best asking for a proper training routine this time. I'm 2.06m which helped in my initial quest for sub 6 if anyone is curious.

Many thanks in advance.

Blimey, that's a whopper of a 2k PB. I have seen a lot of good results from people on The Pete Plan, which forms the basis of what you should be doing.

Best of luck, and if you've done it before, you can do it again and probably go faster with more tailored training.

There's plenty of choice here:

There are about 200 dedicated 2k programs starting with long endurance and tapering for race day with up to 26 weeks in between.

I expect you to be at sub 6 in 3/4 months.

In general, most training should be aimed at aerobic fitness and building a good stroke. On practice, longer sessions at lower ratings.
On top of that do some speedsessions and or time trials.

Cheers for that info hjs. My form is pretty decent based on s few YouTube videos I watched a few years back. I'll try the above program and go from there.

Would 3/4 months be a bit ambitious? I'll be happy to be at 6:10/6:15 by then I think but not sure.

Thanks again.

Give or take. But its my experience that you reach your old level relatively “easy”, if you are age wise close. Which you should be. Ofcourse I don’t know how hard you worked for that pb. I have faith B)
