USB device

Post by tiggyboo » December 31st, 2020, 2:55 pm

Total beginner here - is there any advantage to the usb device if you always use the same machine and the ergdata app?
Thanks,
Al

The device being a memory stick?

If so, then all I can think of is you can move workouts to it from the PM5 to have as a backup. Probably overkill if you have an online log and sync from ergdata. Also you can use it to save 5 more favourite workouts by having another "custom" set different to those on the PM5. Some use it to update firmware, but a laptop and cable are far more reliable. You also need to be aware that C2 techs advise not to use both ergdata and a stick at the same time as it can make the saving of sessions unreliable. Seems that some have managed to make this work, but many have issues and loose data. Overall my judgement is its not worth the trouble, but we're all different.

One or the other, NOT both.

Interesting to see these posts, this is the first I have heard of the "not both" "rule".

I have a Model D, BikeErg and SkiErg, all three with the latest hardware version of the PM5, the latest version of the firmware and a Sandisk Cruzer Fit 32GB USB 2.0 thumb drive in each (LINK) and all three connect to ErgData on my iPhone everytime they are used. Haven't had an issue yet with any of the machines losing any data.

I'm in the same camp as ben_r_. I've used ErgData and USB stick at the same time for nearly 2 years now with no issues.

One reason I keep using it is being able to save favourite workouts in addition to custom workouts as well as ability to modify custom workouts - so I get to save 10 custom workouts in the PM5.
I use it to save both speed and endurance intervals of Pete's Plan.

Yeah, worked for a while for me too, though for weeks/months, not years. Then I lost a session, posted on here and others came forward in the same boat, and indeed some had never made it work. So I took it up with C2 and was essentially told that its "unsupported" and likely to lead to confusion in the s/w about exactly where its trying to write to. If it works for you, great. But if one day it doesn't you know you read it first here.....

I’m a relatively new owner, though my PD moved to C2 rowers for fitness testing prior to my recent retirement. I wanted to continue the workouts, and the home machine is perfect for the wife and I.

To the OP’s question, even with 2 persons using the machine, the on-board memory and ErgData are plenty. You can even sync your data on multiple devices running ErgData (such as a phone and tablet) if you’d like the data stored in multiple locations. It’s much better than hunting down a flash drive all the time.
