Model D Strong Whirring Noise

The "usual" noise from the flywheel has become much louder and a muchmore high-pitched . . . ?

Hmm. Did you try the usual maintenance things like cleaning the flywheel, oiling the chain, etc.?

Does it do it only on the drive, or also during the recovery?

How old is the erg?

Solved it! When I took off the perforated steel band (is there actually a name for it?) around the flywheel for cleaning, I tried the rower and the noise stopped. I suspect it wasn't on correctly.
