I'm a new owner of a Model E with PM5.

Newbie question.
When is the monitor supposed to stop recording time and distance - when you lock handle down or when the flywheel stops?

It depends. If you've used a Just Row (by picking up the handle and rowing, or choosing "Just Row" off the PM5 menu), then it pauses recording when the flywheel slows down to a certain speed (normally a few seconds after you last pulled on the handle with reasonable force). The flywheel will still be moving slowly, but the PM5 will have paused the recording. If you pull again, it will resume with the same recording (assuming the monitor hasn't gone to sleep in that time).

If you push the Menu / Back button, then it will save that last session to memory or your USB drive, and your next pull will start a new session.

If you chose a specific time or distance piece from the PM5 (from the select workout menu), then recording will stop if you reach the end of the chosen time / distance, or if you push the Menu / Back button.

Putting the handle into the holder doesn't change anything on the monitor.

I'm no expert on the PM programming decisions, but I think the logic works as follows:

If someone has chosen "Just Row," or not chosen anything at all, they just sat down and started to row, the PM figures 1) They probably don't care about knowing their stats down to a fraction of a second or the exact meter, and 2) It's impossible for the PM to know for sure if you've stopped / slowed down a bit (or a lot) because you're done with a given session, or if you're taking a very short break and are about to start up again so it's hard to figure out exactly when to cut things off. (the second point is more important and almost certainly why it's programmed as it is, and first explains why it isn't a huge problem)

However, as was mentioned above, if someone tells the PM that they are rowing a specific distance or time, then the PM is able to know exactly when that workout is over and can give you an exact time or distance.

Good luck with your new erg - hopefully you'll come to "enjoy" it as much as the rest of us.

Dont be lazy and use the just row function.

Setup a distance or time and decide on a pace before the start.

It stops recording once the flywheel rpms drop below a certain level some 4 or 5 seconds after you stop rowing if you use the just row.

On a "Just Row" you MUST press the [BACK] button when you're done or you may not get the workout recorded in the PM5 memory. If you use Ergdata it will ask with pop-up "Are you finished" - choosing "NO" is equvalent to pressing the [BACK] button.

Actually, choosing ‘YES’ is equivalent to pressing the [MENU] button. I am aware of the many references to ‘back button’ and ‘menu back‘ in the forum. Pressing [MENU] requests termination of and save record of [JUST ROW]. It also restores or returns the screen to [MAIN MENU] (‘back to the menu’ in the vernacular).

I won’t swear on a stack of menus signed by Gaius D. Chimp that a [BACK] prompt doesn’t appear on a C2 monitor screen. I thought it might be a submenu-specific button ID In the ‘hidden menu’ for inputting correct rower type so I checked: (CONFIRM] on the current PM5 version. Upon further examination, I was reminded that the Open, says me! [DISPLAY] [UNITS] biz has been replaced by a menu option button for [ERG MODEL TYPE]. Descriptors of process linger long after they have no referent in (nominal) reality. Charlie Chan say rose by other name still rose but who care to smell?

@ Citröen: We-ell, there was that one time when you exposed your conviction that the pitch of a bike chain referenced its width. Actually pitch references a specified and regular spacing between fasteners, such as chain rivets.

A cricket pitch is usually found between E# and Fb, innit? We all get caught holding the bagatelle occasionally. Bygones.
