Scratched Monorail

While cleaning my erg today I noticed that the monorail has picked up some scratches recently and those have some ground in dirt. I must have had some grit on it during a recent row. Difficult to get a good picture but see below....



I've wiped it with windoline and soapy water but it's still noticeable. Anyone else had this and have any tips? It's more aesthetic than affecting performance.

I searched the forum and found lots of cleaning stuff but nothing on scratches.

Yeah, you get that.

Bit of windowlene (or other non-proprietary glass cleaner) will remove some scuffs. Others you just have to live with. When your rower has 20,000,000m or more you can treat it to a new monorail "track/tape assembly" for £20.

Grit with a decent number on the Mohs scale, beach sand for example, has been known to get tracked in, after which it inevitably transfers to the seat rail. In my case, It embedded in the seat rollers rather than scratching the contact patches either side of the rail. Devil to pry out with thepoint of a utility knife blade. Put that in the rear view mirror with new rollers, rowing shoes always left in the footstraps and street shoes, workshoes, mud shoes denied entry to the ergspace.

You'd get some of the scratches out with Scotchbrite or emery cloth, but another million metres on and you'll be back to where you're at now.

If the rollers are good and the scratches don't result in any bumps as you row then the best option is to clean monthly (or more frequently) and ignore what's happening.

When I bought my used C it had a scratched rail. I used automotive rubbing compound and a lot elbow grease to smooth it back down, Worked great. I made sure the rollers were also clean and free of embedded grit before I put the seat back on.
