Used model D, any advice appreciated

Hey people,
I'm a traveling RN up near Boston. Seeing as how I don't know anyone here, and all the bars are closed, I thought I would do something productive like row. I'm on the wait list for a new Model D, but who knows how long that will take. Everything used is priced outrageously and if you guys could help me not get completely hosed on this craigslist model D I would appreciate it. It's a PM3, which I believe is an older model. In picture 1 there appears to be a lot of scratches under the seat....or is that the paint job? Or should I even care about that? I was thinking about offering $1100 if everything checks out. If I go check it out in person what should I look for? Anything else? KM? Age?

Thanks In Advance!

It's over priced by $650. Because you're going to want to spend $180 for a PM5.

I'm sure the erg is fine - they're a "buy it for life" item - but as Citroen wrote, it's got an ancient PM3 and $1100 is insane. (never mind the $1350 they're asking)

Keep watching the Row2k classifieds, be willing to drive a few hours: https://www.row2k.com/classifieds/index ... s-for-sale

Drexel University in Philadelphia is listing their team ergs, current generation grey Model D's with PM5s, for $850. Take a day off and drive from Boston to Philly. With gas prices what they are, that's under $40 in gas, round trip, and you'd have a current machine.

Otherwise, if you can wait a month or three, get on C2's waiting list - they've restarted production: https://shop.concept2.com/module/concep ... ist/signup

The scratches are more of an eyesore than anything else. They won't affect the rowers operation. If you're a purist for blemish free products then yes you should care, otherwise no.

As mentioned, this rower is seriously overpriced. You could purchase two for that amount here in the UK!!

I would say pass, stay patient and just keep em peeled, because this approach can often pay off. It did for me, and for many others i'm certain.

Its unfortunate that opportunists are gouging the market on used Ergs because of demand. I've seen insane numbers for Ergs on CL, eBay, and Facebook marketplace. I saw a Model B with PMII offered for $1300. That's twice what it sold for new nearly 30 years ago!

I do believe that the demand for home exercise equipment will continue to be very strong as we all avoid the gym and all other sweat and body fluid exchange points like them. C2 is back up and starting on the back-orders, but demand is off the chart and it will take time to balanced again.

Used C2 ergs typically sell for $400-$750 depending on age and condition. For about $100 in parts typically, you can make any model C, D, or E effectively new so if you find something, know it is very serviceable. If there's damage or upgrades, then the cost may as much as double but usually not much more you put on at $200.

Be patient. There's a Model D on the NYC Craigs list for $750 and claimed only 2 yrs old. In today's market that is a good buy provided it's as described. https://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/spo/ ... 14252.html

Just another affirmation that that price is way too high, and even if you get a beater it can be refurbished relatively easily and cheaply. I was given two model Cs in pieces and asked to make one erg. For less than $50 in new parts I did that, and recycled the truly junk parts.

Regarding the dissing of the PM3. Mine works just fine. In fact the PM2 on my model B works just dandy as well. Don't need no stinkin' high tech PM5 with all its USB, etc. glitches.

You don't sound like you row. You don't sound like you erg. You don't sound like you even workout, judging by your comments on bars being closed. You've gotten great wisdom & common sense from the other more experienced respondents. Practise a little patience. But in the end, it's you nickel & your decision. Personally, I detest people who jack up prices because of shortages!! Yes, they have that right, but if you want to enable such despicable behavior, have at it!

Yea I'm just an alcoholic with a bunch of time on my hands.
Thanks everyone for the advice. This unit sold before I had a chance to make a decision. I've been on the wait list for a new unit, I may just ride that out.
Stay safe!

I rarely buy anything second-hand. Just a personal trait I guess, but I would wait for the new C2 to become available. A brand new, shiny machine will be more motivating, as will the new PM5 with nothing on the clock. Whichever, I’d warmly recommend getting an erg for home use. It may take a little while to get into it. I was very enthusiastic at first but quickly got frustrated because I did nothing but try to beat my 2K PB. Eventually I switched to longer, less frantic rows and enjoyed it far more (and got greater benefit).

Maybe I’m over-sensitive but the comment someone made re your quip about bars being closed was annoying. There are plenty of fitness freaks on this forum, and that’s fine, but a lot of us are normal people who like to balance work and play. I like using my ergs because they ALLOW me to enjoy a pizza and junk food now and then, without guilt, and allow me to go out for a beer if I fancy it. We each have our own needs, goals, and preferences.

Very true. I'm a dustbin for food, I love eating whatever I want to eat, which luckily is usually healthy (albeit lots of it) but I also enjoy occasional junk food etc

OP’s flipoff line worth the read. Too bad no closed caption for the tone deaf!

Oh dear, looks like I've offended a few people with my remarks....let me apologize to those, especially the OP. I plead mea culpa. If there was any snarkiness in my response, it was not directed at the OP but those who price gouge. I completely assumed OP had never erged or worked out & was concerned he was paying an extortionally high price for a used erg, would use it for a couple of weeks, find he didn't like it & turn it into an expensive clothes rack. Again, my apologies.

Well in all fairness 90% of them turn into clothes drying racks or get sold after about 6 months. Mine would have been gone burger over 10 years ago had I not got into RowPro.
