Updating an old Model B

Post by patrick_ford » January 4th, 2020, 7:52 am

I have been using a Model B made in 1990 since this past summer. I have updated the foot plates and installed some casters to help move it around my garage.

I’m hoping to get a PM3 soon to upgrade the original PM1.

The chain appears to be in good shape, but I am planning on getting a new bungee to replace the original, as well as a new seat and a speed ring.

The seat currently has 4 grey colored rollers. My first question is are 4 necessary when C2 states 3 rollers are all you need? Also, is it a given to replace rollers when they are so old?

Am I missing anything else that needs to be replaced or updated? I know my rower is old and antiquated, but it was cheap and has been working great.

Thanks,
Patrick

Hi, Patrick,

I had a Model B from 2001-2017 when I replaced it with a Model D. I gave the B to a friend, and it's still going strong.

C2 says extra seat rollers are recommended if heavy use would cause excessive roller wear. I never used extras, and yes, they need to be replaced periodically.

I never had to replace my chain, either. I cleaned it when I got the rower from a gym that was closing, then I made sure to clean it regularly. I did replace the shock cord and skewer assembly. Like you, I updated the foot plates and added casters. I also replaced the handle (I find the ergonomic handle more comfortable.) and upgraded to a PM5.

Happy rowing!

Bobbi
