Strange rattle from the chain on the recovery

Hello,

I have a dynamic C2 and on the recovery it makes a strange rattle noise from the sprocket/hub assembly around PN2777 and PN1341 from:

Any ideas why its rattling and if it is a problem?

Thanks,
Henry.

I know this is late, but I would suspect the rattle is from the sprocket hub assembly. There is a clutch mechanism in it. The needle bearings are probably shot. You could attempt to take it apart, clean, inspect, relube, and reassemble it on the chance that fixes it. However, if it doesn't then you have to take it all apart again. I'd take it apart, and inspect the sprocket hub assembly, and both spacers, 1341 & 1388, and order what you need.

I too noticed a little bit of chain wiggle during the last foot or so of the recovery. I can see it and feel it in my hands. My Model D is only 2 days old. Not the worst thing to have and I can live with it but just wondering how common this is?

On a brand new factory fresh ergo that chain wobble will be down to a crappy rowing technique where you're rushing the slide and not catching the flywheel on the new stroke. Drop the drag (from 10 to 5 (df=120)) and study some technique videos.

Set it higher, you'll be better able to catch the flywheel that way.
You need to work on technique.

Agreed. I'm guessing that you're drag is too low and you're stroke rate is too high.

What is your stroke rate?

That's exactly the cause, it's one way to do a chain slapper.

Stroke rate only 19 right now.

Hmmm, that is a mystery to me then. Maybe there is something not right with the machine

It's a technique failure. Rushing the slide with drag set too low and you're not able to catch the flywheel so the chain bounces up and down.

Two changes needed
1. Increase the drag to 120.
2. Learn to row.

That's okay I watched some of the best rowers on YT and you can see their chain bouncing on the recovery so I'm in good company

Watch this video this exactly the chain wobble I was talking about at the end of each recovery stroke.

Could it be the bungee needs tightening?

...if you're having an issue with the handle not retracting, there's a pretty easy solution to that
