UK Service

Hi all,

After a few years in the wilderness I’ll be getting back on my Concept2.

Interested in getting a service completed - any recommendations?

Unless your machine has some serious issues, my recommendation would be to do it yourself.

It really isn't that hard and if you don't have to do anything fancy like removing the flywheel, it doesn't require any special tools or skills.

Some paper towels, spray cleaner, 3-in-1 oil for the chain and a screwdriver to remove the flywheel cover should do it.

Finally, be sure you don't disturb the flywheel balance weights that are clipped onto the rim - if you move or remove one of those you'll have a vibration problem.

Unless you sweat buckets like I do the maintenance is pretty easy, just lube the chain, clean the slide and seat rollers and ideally remove the flywheel and clean out the cage and put some oil or thin grease on the one way clutch bearing in the flywheel and your done.

The Bungee cord needs replacing every 10 to 15 years. The Concept 2 rower is a very low maintenance piece of equipment for the hours it can log up.

Once a year, give it a complete check over as well as doing the regular cleans, wipes, oiling etc on daily, weekly, monthly basis.
Also check all the screws now and again. Change batteries on monitor once a year.
I bought a Model C recently for €150 that had been stored in a garage for years.
It was a 20 year old machine, had only 31km on the monitor.
Monitor battery contacts had some corrosion on them, cleaned them up and it worked perfectly.
The machine itself was filthy and grimy but I spent about 5 hours cleaning it all up and touching up a few scratches, checked all the bunnies, chain oiled, ran like a new machine.
Came with a full cover as well.
Sold it again same week, €500

You don't say where you are in the UK. When I lived in Reading my erg received a service to mark its 10th birthday from a company called Rowgear, based in Henley. They did a good job.

My Model C must really hate me, because other than cleaning out the fan a few times, I've never given it a birthday present. (Unless you count upgrading from a PM 2+ to a PM 3, but that didn't come with any candles on it and was done on a random date a few years back.)

Rowgear are now based in Oxford according to their website. They charge £55.00 for a service. I am going to do my own service, you can get a service pack from the Concept2 shop for about £38.00.
According to the C2 web site it contains:

Includes:
• One shock cord (part number 1731)
• Two top seat rollers (part number 1724)
• Two footstraps (part number 1517)
• Eight 1/4-20 x 5/8 buttonhead screws (part number 1253)
• One T27 6 Lobe Driver (part number 2230)

Thanks for the advice all (and I’m based in the north west, for those asking).

After rowing 3-4 times a week since my return, I’m amazed how well the machine has held up. That said, I think the flywheel needs cleaning and shock cord replacing sooner rather than later.
