Canoeing

A quick question regarding rowing machine operation...
Will a paddling stroke damage the mechanics of the erg? I ask because I noticed someone at the gym gripping the handle like a paddle and pulling it in an upright position to one side - like paddling a canoe. The chain rattled against the housing. I've seen countless variations of grips and drives - some are terribly inventive - but at least most keep the chain aligned to the beam.
I'm a Canuck; I like canoeing. It's a symbol of Canadian identity... but a paddle seems out of place in a row boat.
Any thoughts on the matter?

A quick online search found these guys, who make adapters to convert a rower (and alternatively, a skierg) into a paddling training device.
I have no idea how well they work:

It works perfectly and causes no damage, use mine several times per week up to half marathon for around 5 years now. Paddlesporttraining also makes a kayak adapter for use with the skierg and Mark is great to work with, highly recommend them if you're interested. Can use sitting, standing up or attach the paddle board stand and paddle while balancing on that. No, paddling will not harm the rower any more than rowing.
Ombrax, noticed your sig, I'm located in St. Louis as well (St. Charles) and canoe / Surfski the Missouri River and Mississippi Rivers. Next up is the 63 mile Freedon Race on the MO. As always, paddle safe!

Wow! That's a interesting contraption. I've never seen a paddle adapter that can be hooked up to a rowing machine. It would be interesting to try out. It looks complicated.

Steve, with this adapter attached, can the C2 be broken down for storage?
