Are the Old Model B's Faster for Strong Rowers?

I recall using the old model B's in the early/mid 1990's (1993/94). I've never been able to generate the same splits for short pieces (< 1k) on any model C or D since. Perhaps the open cage created drag factors that are simply not achievable in a Model C/D/E?

I have a model B and C. I put a piece of masonite on the side of the B fan to reduce the drag factor. I don't notice any significant difference in my splits between the two now. Without that drag reducer, the B felt really heavy - if you like high drag factors for short sprints, the B is the machine.

I had model B, C and D's, and didn't notice any difference between them including max low pulls and sprints. I covered the side of the B fan cage with roofing paper, most of the perimeter, and changed the sprockets to the same # of teeth as the later models, which brought the drag factor into a more normal range. There's probably a photo of it somewhere on here. The best thing about the B was the pm2+ monitor. If you like high drag, you can make the C, D and E drag factors as high as you want them to be.
