Indoor Rowing and Strava

Strava has been great for tracking running and cycling. It has developed a large social network in the tri based sports.
It would be great to get more rowers tracking their workouts on there to potentially influence how Strava develop the platform for rowing.

With the introduction of the PM5 and the new apps (ErgData, PainSled, LiveRowing and ErgStick) that have followed it has made it a lot easier to record workouts. These workouts can now be uploaded to sites such as Strava.

A regular poster on here @sander has developed a website called rowsandall.com this site can import workout data from the C2 logbook and then upload it to Strava. So if you have an app to record your workouts and upload this to the logbook it can then easily be sent across to Strava. I plead with any rowers that can to also record workouts to Strava. The Concept2 Strava club (https://www.strava.com/clubs/118865) and rowing as a sport could then get more rowing specific functions on the Strava platform.

Just an example of what the social side of Strava can achieve, Olympic Rower Hamish Bond (https://www.strava.com/athletes/4065286) has now got 1351 followers he is currently doing a lot of cycling training and is getting great exposure via Strava. It appears that 'Velo Ronny's Bicycle Store' is also sponsoring him in some way. The same could happen with the top performers of indoor rowing.

Basically the same as what I have been trying to get RowPro to do for years now with the Online rowing only.

Simply a table of meters rowed, time and therefore average pace for the year over the rowing season in ranked order.

Just a page on their Website, its also very good promotion of who is using the RowPro software and how often its used so it helps sell it.

Gets quite frustrating really sometimes when you have all the good ideas and cannot get them implemented.

RowPro missing a trick there. It is so strange when customers put ideas to businesses and they aren't listened to.
That seems to be something LiveRowing has been doing in promoting stats. They often tweet when people hit 100km for a week etc.

What I find good about Strava is the multi sport aspect so it could tie everyone in from all sports, and would do if it wasn't so running cycling focussed.

i used the garmin (open beta) as part of the testing group here.
it links upto garmin automatically and hence the strava website too. sort of kills two birds with one stone :)

That connect IQ app does look really good, great someone has gone out and developed it when it should really be C2 looking to do things like that. A few rumours the C2 logbook might sync with Strava soon.

Just make sure your erg workouts are uploaded as rows to Strava. 'Rowing' with the little tick box for indoor clicked. I think that will help with Strava recognising rowing a little more on the platform.

Strava appears to recognize the developer FIT fields from the Connect IQ application for power, cadence (spm), and heart rate. The distance and speed fields are still ignored. The FIT file categorizes the activity as Fitness Equipment -> Indoor Rowing which is up to the data consumer to honor. Training Peaks and SportTracks both recognize all the fields if you're looking for a third party site. The biggest plus to the FIT file approach over the others is broader utility with a standardized format with the obvious short term draw back that sites are not fully updated to use the newer developer fields and native mappings. It will get there!

The core of RowPro is now really good, its the peripherals and the sugestions that don't get taken on board and adopted quick enough that are a problem.

As it currently stands it still risks being totally overtaken by something brand new to the market, when it should have had the entire online rowing market in the bag about 5 years ago.

The move for the last few years has been to mobile devices like smart phones. Things like automatic synchronization to the Concept 2 LogBook and Rowpro's own online annual meters board has been needed for years.

What I don't want to end up with is having to use several software packages to get what I need and as I have said before, several packages will simply spread all the people interested in online rowing out and in the end they will all be useless. Online rowing is only any good when you have loads of other users to row with and to chat to online. No I don't want to row against robots.

The new Concept 2 Website has pretty much all the data I need these days, as soon as it pulls in the total number of strokes from RowPro and hopefully sorts out the verification one day it will be complete.

Hi all, my first post here.

I was frustrated with no automatic way of uploading C2 sessions to Strava. So I wrote my own scripts to do it.

I've shared it over at P729.com

Simply put, you row, sync your C2 log, and then a few minutes later your session is available to view on Strava.

I added real rivers/courses for the data to overlay. But sessions can simply be marked as 'indoor' in Strava.

This is all done in my spare time so there may be some minor issues. Also I haven't worked on time zones yet so sessions in Strava might look to be at odd times.

Give it a go. Suggestions and feedback welcome.

I use my Garmin FR 235 and a Garmin HR strap while rowing, using the Garmin "other" workout type, and the calorie count on both the rower and my Garmin are pretty close at the end, the rower using watts, and the Garmin using HR, so I am pleased with that. From there, Garmin Connect is set to auto upload to Strava, but obviously rowing stats are not included, and I have to manually switch it to "rowing" on Strava. REALLY hoping for a better workaround eventually, either on the Garmin side or the PM5 side. But, this works to monitor calories at least, and my logbook is enough to monitor distance and progress.

The online service https://rowsandall.com provides tools to import from the c2 logbook and export to Strava. You can also use it to get nk or other smartphone on the water data over to strava as well. The site also provides some interesting tools to analyze your your rowing and track your training.

It's free for basic capabilities including all import/export functions.
