What is the value of an original Model D?
What is the value of an original Model D?
The Model D was first introduced in July, 2003 and I purchased mine in October of that year. It's performed extremely well for over 13 years and has approximately 25,000 miles on it. Aside from normal maintenance (oiling the chain and cleaning the flywheel enclosure) and replacement of the top rollers, no repair work has ever been needed.
However, it is 13 years old and I think it's time to treat myself to a new Model D. I was wondering how much I could sell my present erg for. The shock cord still retracts the handle against the cage, but I would think that since it's so old, it probably should be replaced. The top rollers are five years old and function normally. The PM3 monitor has seen its better days and a PM5 will be needed. I'm sure there also will be some very minor hardware that could need replacement as well.
I have no idea of what my Model D should sell for. It would cost about $160 for the monitor and if the buyer can't do the work themselves, I guess around $100 or so for someone else to replace the shock cord and other small parts that may have worn out. I would assume that $300 might possibly be a fair price because the cost of bringing it up to date would still be well under the price of $945.00 (including shipping from C2) for a brand new one. I don't believe Concept 2 charges for sales tax outside the state of Vermont.
Please let me know what your estimate would be for the price of this erg. When I find out, I could put in on Craigslist or a similar website. But since this rower is in such good overall condition, I would prefer instead to sell it to someone connected to this forum. I live in the Los Angeles, California area close to Beverly Hills and if anyone cares to see it, send me a PM via this forum or contact me directly at the following address:

As you can find in numerous past posts on the subject, the C2 erg is bombproof; they last forever with just routine care. I have a 30 year old model B and a 15 year old model C and they both work great, nothing has ever broken or worn out other than one shock cord, which isn't too hard to replace yourself (or a handy friend if you're not so inclined).
My suggestion is do a good maintenance session, replace the shock cord, update to the PM5 and keep what you have.
If you're intent on selling, then $300 is low. For a model D, I think I'd start at at least $600 if not more, although I haven't done any Craigslist or eBay research. Let the buyer absorb all those costs you mention (if he wants to). Just think of the price of the machine itself, he'll still be getting a bargain.
(Edit: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=151746 - he sold his for $1000 (AUD) [Approx $730 USD] . Pretty quickly, too).

Here in Aus you would still get at least $800Au for it. A more recent D will go for 1000-1200. Brand new is 1500.
Still see model Cs going for 500+ here
Also Facebook selling pages are great. We have a crossfit but and sell page in my city and I listed my 2006 D with PM4 for $1100 and sold it within minutes!

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
Model D's with a fully functioning monitor will go for $600, maybe $700 here in NJ. I buy ergs for rental (trying to add to my current "fleet" of five) and recently paid $700 for two machines in perfect condition, they were both over 10 years old. One had 80k on it (according to the PM) and looked it....zero wear.
You won't get the big dollars if the caveat is it needs a new monitor. I would hold out for $400. Like you said, monitor and a shock cord knock $200 off the sell price right there. Shock cords aren't brutally hard to replace, I've done a half dozen of them. Two of which were rescue jobs from DIY types who got in over their head. If you're not mechanically inclined, you may not want to try it.
Pretty hard to find people who actually work on these machines (which is why I started doing it!). If you don't have the ability to do the repairs yourself, sell it as is for a fair price and go new.

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
As I mentioned in another thread yesterday, if you're going to actually use your erg a lot, unlike the majority of home users, you could easily buy a new machine, look after it and sell it after 3-4 years for almost what you paid, then buy another brand new one for a little bit of extra cash. Keep maintaining and updating like that and you'll always have a good machine and never need to repair parts.
And not to sound like I'm trying to rip off unsuspecting buyers here - I mean you could sell it to a crossfit gym, for example - they don't care if it's spotlessly clean or had a pm 3, 4 or 5 - they are going to treat them fairly poorly in a dusty chalky sweaty environment, usually with big garage doors open to the elements, and only for 500m sprints or 50cal thrasharounds etc
At home for lots of meters you want a nice clean quiet machine with nice smooth rollers etc

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
Thanks for all of your advice. After taking a closer look at the shock cord on my Model D, even though it's 13 years old, it still appears to be in very good condition. There seems to be no fraying of any sort and it's just as effective at drawing the handle directly to the cage as when it was new. Therefore, there should be no need to replace it or even tighten it for quite a long time. In this case, I'm reminded of the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
There are only two things that will decrease the value of this erg. The first one of course, is that even though it's in excellent condition, it's still thirteen years old with over 25,000 miles on it. The second one is that the PM3 monitor, while continuing to be reasonably functional, is becoming dimmer and harder to see. It should be replaced with a far better PM5. Figuring that the new monitor will cost around, $160.00, I decided to ask for $500.00 for the Model D. That way, the buyer will have an excellent C2 for a total cost of about $660.00, about $300.00 less than a new one. I consider that to be a very good deal.
Including shipping, this erg cost me $886.00 in 2003. Selling it for $500.00 thirteen years later, I supposedly will "lose" $386.00. However, I look at things another way. 386 divided by 13 equals about 30, meaning owning this erg will have cost me about $30.00 a year or $2.50 a month. I think that's a small price to pay for something that has kept me very healthy and given me so much enjoyment for all those years. Where else can someone pay so little and get such great results in return?
Interestingly, with shipping added, the cost of a new Model D is now $945.00, an increase of only $59.00 in thirteen years. This company has done their best to keep costs to their customers down as much as possible and I appreciate that very much.
My Model D is now for sale for $500.00. If anyone is interested, contact me via PM or at my address in the original post. If you live in the LA area, come over and take a look at it. I think you will agree that for the price, it's a real bargain. I'll put it up for sale on various websites like Craigslist, but I'll wait a while to do that. I will give first priority to people in this group who can better appreciate in what outstanding condition it is.
The purpose of my original post was to learn the value of my erg, not to state that it was for sale. If I get no response to it for a couple of weeks, I will start another thread saying that it is for sale, giving all the details.
Just remember that if someone decides to buy it, they'll have to wait a little while before they can pick it up. I'll have to order my new one from C2 and it should take a week or so for me to receive it and put it together. I don't want to go a single day without the use of a C2.
Thanks again for all your advice. I appreciate it very much.

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
If i was in the market for a C2 i would be all over that for 300 or even 500 bucks.
Hell, i was prepared to pay up to £350 GBP for a home used only, good conditioned model C, when i was on the hunt.

Sounds like you have a good plan. I work on several hundred C2's per year, you're right about the shock cord. If it's not visibly frayed and the handle returns with minimal chain "whip" don't even give it a second thought.

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
Just replace the shock cord, oil the chain and clean the rollers.
Make sure you still have that gold swivel bush that protects the U bolt from chewing the chain holder on and your good to go.
No real advantage in replacing the monitor, just update the firmware on it because basically no one does this.
Model D1's over here are overpriced, considering how old they are now a few hundred bucks more got you a new one so I bought new.

Re: What is the value of an original Model D?
In 2013, I sold my 17-year old Model C for $650. I had updated the seat, the handle and rollers, and monitor to a PM3. Bought a Model D / PM4 for $800 at the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints....and am doing it again just 3 years later, because it's cheaper than upgrading the monitor, AND I get another 2/5 warranty.
