Model D for Outdoor Use

Post by djk25a » March 7th, 2012, 2:30 pm

I live in Miami, FL. I don't have space in my house for a rower so was thinking to put the Model D in my garage which I use for storage. The garage is not air conditioned so would get pretty hot and humid in the summer. Idea would be to workout with the garage door open.

My concern is what moisture will do to the rower. Does anyone have a setup like this - having their rower either in an un-air conditioned place or covered outside? If so, has the machine held up? Anyone else have any thoughts?

Thanks.

We have lots of folks using C2 ergos in unheated, unairconditioned garages in the UK because it's extremely rare for anyone to have A/C here.

PM3 and PM4 monitors don't do well when very wet (same with any electronics).

You could wrap it in "saran wrap cling plus" (aka "cling film" in my part of the world) to keep the moisture out. Or you could remove the monitor and store it indoors when not in use. Rusty leaking batteries WILL cause it's early demise.

Worst C2 I've seen was in a seafront gym in Brighton, Sussex. That one was rusty in places where C2s shouldn't go rusty but was still working.

I live in North Carolina and have had my Model C stored outside in my carport for the last five years. No problems whatsoever. I keep the erg covered with the indoor rower cover (available from the Concept2 shop) at all times when not in use. I also always remove the PM3 and store it inside when I'm finished erging -- when I install it for use, I just finger tighten the bolt nuts so it won't fall off and will be easy to remove again. I haven't noticed any rust or weather-related issues from storing the erg outside. I think yours would be fine in your garage. While it's not humid here year round, we do have some pretty hot and miserable summers. No issues with the erg, though.

Well C2 erg owners, eat your hearts out.
I have never used my Rowperfect erg indoors, regardless of the weather(rain or extreme heat).
Consequently, I have been caught out in heavy rain showers on numerous occasions and after two years the erg still looks and works as good as new. Try doing that with a C2 erg and see what happens.
Fortunately the Rowperfect erg consists of a combination of stainless steel & plastic components and a waterproof monitor.
PBs: 2K 6:13.4, 5K 16:32, 6K 19:55, 10K 33:49, 30min 8849m, 60min 17,309m
Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

Worse than humidity as such might be a possible salty atmosphere, if you get wind off the Atlantic.

So true. I once checked out a used Model C for sale by a woman who lived a few blocks from the beach in SF. Turns out she kept it out on her open-air balcony and practically every metal sufrace, including the chain of course, was rusted. She had described it as being in mint condition.
