Hi,

The problem: I don't get any readings on the display when rowing. It only displays zeroes. I bought the machine used for scrap value but hope to get it to work. Apart from the monitor the rest of the machine is fine.
The monitor: When running the self test it looks ok. All buttons works. There was a battery leak, which is now cleaned up, but I can't see that it has made any damage since it was very limited. The monitor doesn't start up when I start rowing.
The sensor: When testing the sensor with the Voltmeter while rowing I get no reading(I think I'm doing testing correctly). (I also have a Model D with a PM3. I get a reading on that sensor when performing the same test). I also tested replacing the sensor with a new sensor, also two contact surface plug, but this didn't make a difference. The monitor still doesn't work and the Volt meter doesn't indicate anything.

Is it the monitor that is toast or what do you suggest? Any solutions suggested?

Hi there forum members, there must be someone out there with some experience or even just speculations. This is my first posting and I had hoped for someone answering my questions.

Time to buy a retrofit PM3 or PM4 to replace your dead PM2.

There's loads of horror stories about broken, irreperable PM2s on here. Since you've got a cheap rower you'll be wise to spend a little bit of money to get a modern monitor. You may be lucky and find a PM3 user who's upgraded to PM4 and is selling their old PM3.

The PM3/PM4 has a whole lot of benefits compared to a PM2.

There is basically no Voltage coming from the Model C sensor. It is just a coil of wire and should measure 100 Ohms while wiggling the plug to check for a fracture in the wires. The Voltage is just millivolts and 3 peaks every rev of the flywheel as the 3 magnets in it generate the voltage. You need a scope to see it, it is a very low signal.

If the sensor checks out then the corrosion has taken out the +3V supply to the Op Amp at the top of the board by the connector. This 3V supply is via a chip resistor directly below the lower battery terminals so it's a problem when they leak.

Thanks for the 'confirmation' of the monitor being toast.
I'll have to live without a monitor for a while. Since it's my back-up machine only used when I train with the spouse or a buddy I should be fine.
If there is anyone out there willing to sell a used PM3 monitor for a reasonable price please contact me. (I'm located in Canada).
