One-day old Model D

Post by bobkwan2007 » January 2nd, 2011, 9:00 am

Just wondering how much wear and tear could be put on a machine during an IRC. At the Canadian IRC in February, they are selling C2D's the day after at a discount, say around $150 off of what you might pay for a brand new one. A friend of mine is interested in getting one and I recommended that he wait a month for the CIRC's. They are also selling D's with PM4 for $1150. Is it worth it to get one with PM4?

Any opinions on this subject? Is it a good deal?

It's normally 2000m times the number of races. If you look at Dave Holby http://www.worldrecordrow.com he rowed 40,075,000 in 934 days and his C2 model D is still going strong.

Stop worrying and accept the fact that you get a new machine at a big discount.

PM4 has a few benefits over a PM3 and is worth the extra price.

Given the exchange rate, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy it in U.S. Dollars and have it shipped UPS or FedEx?

If would, if we weren't being charged $190 brokerage plus $60 S&H, which would bring the cost to at least $1150. Perhaps if the CAD to USD exchange went to $1.10 like it did a few years back it might be worth while. At $1150 it's still a great price considering one retailer was selling it here for over $1400 for a model D.

Weird - Your banks and credit cards charge that high of a fee? My Visa card (through my bank) charges a $5 flat fee for any non-U.S. purchases, with the exchange set at market rate. So if I were to buy a $1000 CAD product with my CC, it would cost me $1015 USD according to my bank's site at the moment. Might want to check your card's services ...

The brokerage fee is charged by the courier company, not the bank. The banks/CC company would charge a 2% for the currency conversion. The brokerage fee of $190 would include the provincial and federal taxes (13% combined), plus a 'commission' for brokering the purchase. All things considered though, ordering directly from C2 is still a pretty good deal, and still the cheapest way to purchase a new machine.

I'll consider buying a new machine when our CAD is worth $1.50USD.

Don't worry, between your growing oil exports and our incompetent monetary policy, I don't think you'll need to wait that long.
