Comparibility between ergs has always been our goal and may present some challenges with this version. However, I think any new model will always produce a certain amount of anecdotal speculation of improved times. Model D and C use the same flywheel, chain, sprocket, bungee cord, etc. and I'd guess that any perceived differences in scores might be from people setting the machines up by damper position rather than drag factor. This would usually result in a lower drag factor on the D than the C, which may be a more efficient setting for some individuals. C2JonW

Since the blog post have their been any updates on the release date of the new C2 dynamic erg model, or roughly when it'll be available for pre-order?

No. It doesn't appear to have got out of the prototype stage, let alone into pre-production of a commercial product.

On Fri 28 May 2010, 16:11 C2's Jon W said, "I can't speculate on a date at this time". So speculation is futile until the new model is announced.

We'll be updating the blog in a couple of days with more detail, but briefly we're in a pre-production phase right now. We have refined the previous design and are working on assembly of a run of 10 machines which will not be for sale but will go to selected sights and events for feedback and evaluation and testing. There will be some minor tweaking of this design and if all goes well the next iteration will be a production machine available in the fall. C2JonW

This is great news, Jon. Thanks for the update. The initial blog post that Peter did on the C2 dynamic erg was very insightful. Looking forward to reading more.

Probably way too early for this kind of info, but I wonder what the price will be? I'm hoping it won't be too much more than a Model D so it's affordable to humble scribes like myself!

If it's double or even 1.5 times more than a Model D it will really hurt user adoption.

Jon - can you offer any insight at this point, even a guesstimate?

Pricing is still a moving target. There's a lot to be done in the areas of simplifying the design which will impact our costs and ultimately the price to the consumer. There are more parts than a D or E, but our ballpark target has been "the price of a D rower with slides". We're probably close to that. Just a note that we will have one of the units at Canadian Henley this weekend. C2JonW

Good stuff, John. Obviously you're a business like any other and have to cover your production costs while making a profit. If you can indeed achieve the price point you mention, I think the new model will be very popular. Please keep us all updated!

Based only on the videos of the new dynamic ergs, my favorite is the Oartec Slider, followed by the RowPerfect and finally the New C2 Prototype. The footage I have seen of the New C2 prototype dont sell it to me. The users (even the Olympian Malcolm Howard) looks awkward trying hard to mantain the rhytmic movement I love from the model D. Hope the team at C2 can better the protoype so to mantain their status as the "World's Best Rowing Machine".

Unfortunately C2 no longer have the best rowing machine in the world. One can only hope that their new dynamic erg can win that position back from Rowperfect and Oartec, which are considerably better ergs. C2 will still sell the most number of ergs for quite some time but that's not because it's better. Just like Coca-Cola might sell the most soft drinks but don't make the best soft drink.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

No offence but the rowperfect doesn't look that great to me. Reminds me of a modified model B, is that the latest version on their website ? it looks like a prototype. The Rowperfect however is the right approach, get the flywheel to move as this is lighter than moving your bodyweight. In theory the new concept 2 is better still as there is no mass of even the flywheel to move. If I had the motivation I would just build my own Erg, however the Concept 2 Model C is good enough and there are better things to spent my time on. Without RowPro it wouldn't even be a starter for me anyway.
