For what it's worth, I'd also be interested in a ConnectIQ app for it to work with a Garmin FR230 watch that I just bought...

What if the PM5 was made recognizable as a power/cadence sensor?

Not specified as for now. I have requested for Garmin Connect.

Bump. The newest PM5 firmware now supports ANT+ FE-C and Garmin allows devs to write to a FIT file. There's no more technical limitations to an app. The only question is when, and will it be from Concept2?

It wasn't clear to me from this thread whether one of the older garmin watches can capture data from the PM5. I bought a FR60 on eBay for $60 and tested it yesterday. It worked perfectly and captured HR, stroke, distance, watts, etc. Everything was uploaded afterwards to Garmin Connect via an Ant USB.

And actually, I am going to sell the watch now, if anyone is interested. It's the Women's one and I didn't like the way it felt on my arm so I also got a men's one.

I have a garmin 235, doesn't work with that, ConnectIQ has an app that uses the watches accelerometer for pace but no real meaningful data. I use my really old 610 which, although finicky does connect and uploads "rowing" to garmin connect.

That isn't really correct, until the announcement today, developers had no way to put data into a FIT file. The functionality they did have was to create a FIT file recording using data from the Garmin provided sensors and GPS data but no way to augment or add information. That being said, today they announced the new SDK which does give developers the ability to add information to a FIT file. Once developers have some time to play with it and devices have supported firmware released I would bet that you'll see a CIQ application. :)

I'm giving up with my Garmin 610 working with the PM5. Sometimes the PM 5 finds it, sometimes not, sometime times it stays connected then 5-10 minutes into a workout it just drops the connection. I'll just stick to painssled for now to get the .tcx files that I can add to my other data. I don't think this latest update helped any fwiw

At the present time none of these watches will connect with the PM4 or PM5 due to several reasons including some technical issues with the protocol and more importantly there are no apps written. I would invite any ConnectIQ developers interested in making a ConnectIQ app to contact me. Until then, I suggest the older watches such as FR50 60 70 210 310. You can check compatibility on the http://www.thisisant.com site - just select the Concept2 machine you have for a list of compatible watches.
Hi Scott, in the above post, from the end of last year, you said Garmin's newer watches don't work with the Concept2 yet. You went on in that thread to say "Newer watches (920, 230, 235, vivoactive, fenix3, etc. google 'ConnectIQ compatible devices') are all ConnectIQ based and would require an app; and cannot use the ANT+FE profile Concept2 follows.". Today I went to the site you mentioned and selected Concept2, and then Model E with PM5. This returns 75 compatible devices and includes the Garmin Forerunner 235 amongst them.

Does this mean that you were able to find a developer and get this working with the PM5, or do you think this is this an error in that site's compatibility list? I'm trying to settle on a new watch but am kind of going in circles trying to find clear info on what works and what doesn't. The terminology is also used very loosely (eg "ANT+" means different protocols to different people).

Regards,
Chris

These pages can be misleading, for the particular page you found it is listing those as compatible for ANT+ HR monitor. The Fenix3 HR, FR235, and vivoactive HR all support broadcasting HR readings which is what they are listing as compatible. The Garmin developer site has listed that CIQ SDK 2.1 is in BETA now and will support recording data on supported ConnectIQ watches. They have also released BETA firmware for some of the devices supporting this but I would strongly recommend against installing those right now since they are still experiencing some issues. The developer blog mentions that the store will begin supporting CIQ 1.3/2.1 apps beginning in mid-July. It isn't clear what this data will look like in Garmin Connect and it uses the FIT 2.0 developer fields which most likely aren't supported yet on 3rd party sites. I'm guessing that you'll see apps for the Concept2 in the future for some of the devices.

Thanks jcl, shame as the 235 looks like a decent all in one fairly accurate device. Hopefully before too long support on both sides, for specific protocols, will improve

For those who are interested to try, my site rowsandall.com (which is in beta) can be used to pull data from Concept2 and sync them with Strava and SportTracks (not fully tested yet as I have just completed the first implementation today).

You can sign up here: http://rowsandall.com/

Warning: The site is in rapid development so you may be in for a rough ride. On the other hand, you will be able to suggest improvements while the site is in development
