The Model D TACH pickups went through about 5 generations before arriving at the current one.

They all essentially work the same in driving the numbers the monitors output, the difference is the amount of power they generate when you row.

The early "Single" coil version really did not output enough to run the monitor 100% or charge the battery in the PM4 properly.

The next versions use the "Twin" coil and this combined with the now lower run current of the second gen PM3 onwards is enough to power the monitor 100% while you row.

The PM3 can still run with the latest rower and is still configurable to run with the older rowers as well.
so all model D's generate 18 volts as well, which the PM3 accepts?

All the Model D have essentially the same 3 wire pickup.

Whether the PM3 actually uses the 18V you say I'm not sure but it certainly accepts the cable being plugged into it. Pretty sure if you take the batteries out then row with it the monitor will try and come on if its a later generator and a later version of the PM3.

I never test what happens in this area, you plug it in and row and it works.

I have observed that plugging in the USB cable, depending on the year of the PM3 and version it uses power from this source as well because the current drops off on the normal 3V power supply that I use to replace the batteries.

I only ever check the "Run" current and the " Standby" current on all the monitors I service from the 3V power supply. Monitors not shutting down to the specified standby current is quite a common problem and it kills your batteries in weeks or even days rather than like 12 months.

Thanks! I stand corrected then. I always thought the generator came with the PM5 (along with the 12 pole magnet). Good news for the topic starter.

Sensor Coil
Part Number: 2401
For use with Model D and E Indoor Rowers and the SkiErg.
This is the sensor coil for the power generator that transmits flywheel motion to and generates
power for the Performance Monitor on your indoor rower or SkiErg. See more info.

Is there no EMF involved in the way this works?
