I think that is one of the big differences with cycling: with cycling there always is power produced and it is quite accepted to use the second part of the cycle to pull with (one) leg. In rowing, it isn't because on a boat you would destroy the speed of the boat when you start pulling your legs in the recovery. And a too fast return would on an Erg leaves you with a too fast flywheel and thus a less effective stroke. Some might even frown on Carl's double tucking, as straps getting loose during a row would suggest some pulling action going on. As a person who rows around 50% strapless to focus on technique, I have to agree with you.
Clipless pedals for the C2 rower

Re: Clipless pedals for the C2 rower
If I look at the headline for this thread it looks like pedals have been put on a rower and I am visioning a pedalo.
Then if it is a thread meant for the bike erg I would have to ask why you made ally toe clips, I just bought a pair of light steel ones for 3.99 that bolt on the front of the pedal. When doing sprints on the bike erg I bring in the uplift part of the stroke pulling against the toeclips to maintain pace when tiring. On rides longer than 1 k, I go in bursts of pulling up as I do not have the stamina yet to do a whole ride on high cadence pulling up. I dont use straps I have no use for them on an indoor bike.
If toeclips have been made for the rower, then I would wonder why
. I just pull my strap with the opposite hand and never have a problem. So right hand pulls left strap and vice versa. In fact the only time I use this method is for the 100m or 1 min, as it is too painful sometimes as this method pulls then far too tight lot of the time.

I think the guy meant Clipless pedal on the RowErg. Like others have said, there is no need if you have good form.Dutch wrote: ↑May 15th, 2022, 5:33 pmIf I look at the headline for this thread it looks like pedals have been put on a rower and I am visioning a pedalo.

Maybe it would help slightly on crazy 100m or 1 minute sprints, maybe...

I think he really means a rower, as he starts with:

Except that toe straps are from the dark ages..

Mechanical foot hold-down I designed and built. One hand operation. Quick release. Adjusts automatically to any size foot. Never loosens. Much better than straps.

I agree with the OP that straps are from the dark ages. Yes, foot straps have been traditionally used in rowing shells, but it does not follow that they are therefore the preferred choice for a rowing machine. The weight considerations of OTW rowing do not apply to a rowing machine. The C2 straps are all about cost, nothing else. Functionally, a mechanical foot hold down - snap your feet in, snap your feet out - is a better choice for a rowing machine.

Here is the first iteration. The adapters have since been reshaped into something pleasing to the eye.
I get that this isn't for everyone.
I LOVE IT.
I have bought 9/16" taps from Amazon in case I ever want to make another set.
A future set of adapters would be cut by a machine shop. Using a disc grinder took WAY too long![Wink ;-)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

The C2 footplate has a lot of slop in the mounting holes to allow your heel to move in/out. Likely intentional.
Looking forward to seeing the picture.

I’m wondering if it’s not a hoax. The thread for left pedal would have to be left handed. Mmmmmmmmm
