Itching to buy an erg

Post by still33 » March 19th, 2008, 12:06 pm

I started erging in January after reading about rowing and sculling, so as to be more informed about crew. Initially this was to understand the sport, as my son is on the freshman crew team at U. of Wisconsin. I was intrigued with the thought of learning to row, and will be taking lessons this spring.
I have grown to like erging, it is a helluva better workout than treadmills and recumbent bikes, etc. The C2 logbook is an awesome motivator. And so I am looking to buy a Model D or E but wonder how long I should wait to be sure this not a passing obsession. I don't think it is- I initially planned to erg at the YMCA for 6 months or so and then decide, but it would be nice to erg at home at least some of the time. Any advice???
(You all may be the wrong people to ask- if you weren't into erging you wouldn't be reading this!)

Welcome.
I say 'scratch the itch' I think you, and maybe others in the family as well, will be quite happy with it for a long.
If it turns out for some reason that you are not, they still have a very high resale value.
Good luck, and have fun with the rowing/erging.

BUY IT ~

Post by Kona2 » March 19th, 2008, 2:21 pm

I agree - buy one! There are two really good benefits to having one at home. First, it's clean, it's new and it's QUIET (as long as you keep chain well-lubed, etc.). This is important in that you will find rowing a lot more pleasant - and this leads to the second thing. 2) You row more often. This is especially true when you're in a challenge - or you find that you just didn't have time to get to the gym. It's pretty easy to knock out 5 or 10K even when you have a full day. And during challenges, when you see that you or your team could really use a little extra effort, you might do two sets in a day (or three).

I belong to a gym - I advocate belonging to a gym or doing some cross-training with rowing. When I use the rowing machines at the gym, they are not generally well maintained (even the model E's - which are fairly new), and they usually don't have a log card (unless you bring it with you). It's great to be able to go back and check your meters - then go log them in.

You'll be delighted!

I will add my opinion here as well..BUY ONE

It is the best piece of exercise equipment you will ever own.I have had mine for over 10 years and have used it more consistently than any other product I own.It is money well spent and worth its weight in gold.

The company is excellent and has awesome CS.

I have an older version but it will stand up to any of the newer ones.
Very minimum maintenance and takes up little room really when you compare the footprint of other pieces of equipment.

Rowing with this product gives you more bang for your buck..a really great workout in a small amount of time and you never have to worry about fitness club time limits if you have your own.

I am a Trainer and would highly recommend this as a product to own for my clients, family and friends..and I don't work for Concept2.. B)

I have a model D, and I have also rowed on the model E. They are both great machines! Enjoy your model E! Let us know what you think when it arrives - and it does not take very long to ship at all!

I've never used an E. I use a D at the gym, and that's what I just ordered for home. I didn't see anything in the E that seemed worth the extra money to me, but I'm not a sophisticated enough rower to know the difference. I did however, go for the PM4 version. The USB connectivity was important to me (since I want to hook up to a Mac) as well as the heart rate monitor were the things that made me push up and spend the extra $150 for the PM4.

The truth is, over the lifetime of the rower, the difference in cost in negligible. Even if you only got 5 years of rowing out of it and then tossed it in the trash, the difference is only a couple dollars a month. And, given that you'll get much more use of it and that the rower holds it's resale value well, the net difference is pennies a month. Hmm... Now I'm almost wondering if I should have got an E too. :)

(Looking at the UPS tracking - still on schedule for delivery tomorrow - HOORAY!)

i have had my model d/pm3 since 12/30/07 and i am completely happy with it. 250,000 meters so far. if you are going to put in the effort you will not regret the purchase. so many people buy equipment or gym memberships and then do not follow through - if you are one of those people, you should get a nordic track - they are better for hanging laundry on!

maximoburrito-
the PM3 has USB connectivity. The 4 has ANT wireless - more games - and i think a drag factor display on a regular screen... i took the day off to wait for UPS when mine came...

I have a D. I carry my D from the garage to the garden unless it is raining. The lighter machine is a benefit. The D is fairly easy for me to carry in one piece.

I've never seen an E so I don't know if I would find it heavy or awkward.

The PM3 has full USB connectivity just like a PM4.
The PM3 can display drag factor (Main menu --> more options --> display drag factor) just like a PM4.

The choices to make are:
  • New model D2 with PM3
  • New model D2 with PM4
  • New model E with PM4
  • second user machine

Buy one for sure. I lost my Concept2 in a divorce and missed the machine a lot more than anything else... well anyway, I bought a new one right away. Concept2, not wife.
