pm4 gone wild

Post by ChrisH » January 28th, 2007, 3:50 pm

During my warm up today my pm4 would go blank and then start over repeatedly. On one occasion it displayed what looked like a trap error. Because I was in a hurry to complete my workout I did not record any data in the code. Previous to this their have been no problems. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using rechargable batteries? Maybe it's dead.
Take a look at:
http://www.concept2.com/us/support/moni ... issues.asp
related to the 571 error. I would make sure it's updated to Ver 16 firmware and fully charge the battery (leave plugged into a USB port of your computer overnight) and see if the problem goes away.

If this does not work and/or you are not using rechargable batteries, by all means contact Concept2 (Shawn or Scott in the USA and Canada, or your local dealer if not) for assistance.

Scott,

Is it better to leave the pm3 connected to the computer when the erg is not in use, and does it make a difference if the computer is on or off.

Thanks.

If the computer is on and the PM3/4 is connected to the USB it will draw 100mA and the batteries won't go flat.

You could wire a USB-B plug (red +ve/black -ve) to a 5v 100mA wall-wart and have a mains powered PM3/4.

I have just now downloaded the latest firmware. I'm using rechargeable batteries and not connected to a computer. I'll charge the battery and see if that solves the problem. Thank you Scott, John and Doug.

No errors during today's workout. The new firmware seems to have solved the problem. Looks like I'm good to go. :)

Just make sure your power supply is not putting out MORE than 5v. The PM4 is probably more tolerant than the PM3, but the PM3 can be damaged by voltage above probably 5.25v. Concept2 does sell an AC adapter for the PM3/PM4.

Great, thanks.

How about when the computer is off.

Well, that's a complex question.

When the computer is on, the PM3 or PM4 should stay on, and PM4's will trickle 55mA or so) charge the rechargable batteries for up to 24 hours. PM3's and PM4's with alkaline batteries do not attempt to recharge the batteries. The PM3 and PM4 should draw, normally, up to 100mA from the computer.

If the computer is off and USB power is removed (see below), then the PM3 or PM4 should shut off.

Now, SOME computers, when turned off, still provide some resistance path through the USB circuit. This draws down the batteries in a PM3 (and probably a PM4, but I'm not sure at the moment). SO if you leave your PM3 plugged into a computer and the computer is off and you note that your power is draining away, you're one of the lucky folks that have this strange design 'feature' in your computer. I think that I remember ehagberg might have had this 'feature' (ok, problem). In this case, I would recommend disconnecting the USB cable. For most people, this is not going to happen, so I wouldn't worry about it until you note a problem. Probably a cheap USB hub would also solve the problem.

Did I answer the question in all my rambling?
