Frayed Shock Cord

Post by Snowdigger » June 8th, 2006, 7:26 pm

I have a Model D that recently began running "rough" on the return. After some inspection I clearly have an issue with the shock cord. In one small section the cord has begun to fray and the rubber core is visible. Has anyone else run across this problem? What is the cause? I also have a question about the installation of the cords. On one side the cord actually crosses itself (twisted?). Is this normal or a problem from when they were first installed? The cord does not cross on the other side.

I know the cord will need to be replaced but have concerns that there is another underlying problem that needs to be resolved. BTW, I assume that continuing to use the erg is out of the question, or is it?

It is time to replace the cord when the core is visible.

I went more than 20 million meters on the model B before replacing the shock cord. It was greatly frayed but still in good shape.

There must be something rubbing that shouldn't be there.

Snowdigger- it sounds as if the shock cord routing was not correct. The cord should not twist or cross itself. Here's a schematic:

If the cord isn't broken through you might be able to route it correctly so you can continue to row while you await a new cord. C2JonW

My C2 D has done about 1.3 million metres, and the shock cord is quited frayed in parts, but the rubber is not visible. Unfortunately the fray fibres also accumulate in the chain.

I am a bit disappointed it has only lasted this long, and whats worse is that I have ordered 2 cords from the local C2 rep, and they are costing about 20US Dollars each plus postage!

Together with a new handgrip and 1 log card it is costing me about 95US dollars. Man do I live in the wrong country.
