Noisy rower at full extension of chain.

Post by old wobbler » June 14th, 2025, 7:42 am

Machine :- Concept 2 Model C from march 2003. Owned since February 2025, no monitor till I fitted a PM5 to it so no idea of number of meters its done.

Yesterdays row session was a zone 5 sprint intervals. I gave the machine what for 8 times.

Todays general row and the machine is now noisy! Theres a strange rattling noise coming from the front. It more noticeable when I am on full stroke and the chain is fully or almost fully out with me.

I tried rowing with my feet out the holders and a shorter row and there is no such noise.

The seat is a new seat with new rollers and bearings. Seat slide is clean and no dirt on rollers or slides.

As its a model C, probably on the original bungee and chain plus cog then whole lots got to be replaced.

Before I go mad and buy all this from Concept anything else I can check or do to see if its something very stupidly simple and easy to solve.

This might be a stupid question, but have you oiled the chain, especially when it's fully extended? Or am I misunderstanding your reference to the 'front'?

Yes and NO you are not misunderstanding the reference.

Its either something in the fan, something on the bungee (the lower plastic cover is loose) or the cog itself. I've had a good look and shake and I cant hear anything loose rattling.

Could it be as simple as the chain isn't oiled enough? I do it every other month. Put oil on a cloth and rub that along the chain with it fully extended out.
