PM3 hangs during firmware update

Post by gandcc » July 1st, 2024, 6:28 am

PM3 starting firmware version: 311

Attempted firmware update to versio. 332 with the Utility, it got to 3% and went no further. The Utility showed a timeout message and Utility connectivity to the PM3 was lost. I could not reconnect.

The PM3 display shows:
Concept2 USB Loader Update / (/ rotates)

SN: 400132577

Rev: 317

USB Connected

The Utility will no longer connect to the PM3, but the screen reflects USB Disconnected when the USB cable is removed from my laptop, and will show Connected when reattached.

The PM3 display is hung, reset button has no effect. Removing and reinstalling battery has no effect.

Battery has been removed to see if anything happens after 30 minutes and reinstall.

Can I please get some help on next steps? Thank you.

email info@concept2.com with exactly what you have in this thread. They are responsive even for older devices and will help you through it.

While waiting response try the "firmware update failed" recovery steps here: https://www.concept2.com/support/monito ... leshooting

1.Simultaneously press and hold the Change Units button, as well as the first and fifth gray buttons on the right (see image).
2.While holding these buttons, reset the monitor using a paper clip and the reset button on the back of the monitor.
3.Release the buttons when the PM displays "Concept2 Flash Loader.”

If the issue is not resolved, close and restart the Concept2 Utility. If the issue persists, try rebooting your computer and attempting the update again.

If you have performed the reset and are still encountering problems with the update, please note the PM screen contents (error messages, etc.) and contact Concept2 for assistance (info@concept2.com or 800.245.5676).

Issue Resolved. I just tried the Utility again and the update was successful. Firmware now updated to v 332.

I don’t have a reset button on my Pm3 is there anyway to perform this?

Disconnect the USB-B lead, remove the batteries, wait for 30 minutes. Then re-install the batteries and try again.

I have the same problem and asked Concept 2. Their response is below. I have not tried it yet, because I don't have any compelling reason for the update, and I don't feel like doing a battery pull and resetting the date and time, which is what I've had to do after previous attempts ...

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your email. Please try the following steps to get the PM3 to complete the firmware update:

Unplug the USB cable from the PM3 and your computer
Quit the Concept2 Utility software and restart it
Put the PM5 into flash loader mode:
Simultaneously press and hold the Units button, as well as the first and fifth gray buttons on the right (see image)
While holding these buttons, reset the monitor using a paper clip and the reset button on the back of the monitor.
Release the buttons when the PM displays "Concept2 Flash Loader”
Plug the PM5 into the computer and start a firmware update

Interesting mix of PM3 PM5 suggests its a generic solution across generations. What I'd call the nuclear option as you'll lose everything on the PM including lifetime meters etc - but worth a go if its otherwise fubarred.

OK, I couldn't leave it alone. Eventually I made it work. Seems to be flakey so I'm not sure what precisely did the trick.
Thank you for your help on this. After several attempts I finally made it work.

Here's the report I sent back to C2.

----

I tried various combinations.

Windows 11 laptop with USBA-C adapter. No go. PM3 said "USB connected" but nothing. Tried various combinations of reset, starting C2 utility.

Windows 10 laptop with USBA. Worked second time. First time I started the C2 utility before plugging in the PM3. Started but hung (like my Windows 11 original attempt).

What worked: Windows 10, USBA, start C2 Utility and select download, PM3. Then plug in the PM3.

-----

Epilogue: I only had to do the 4-button monty once to get the PM3 in loader mode. Now that I've done it, I think my original attempt at using the C2 utility also put it into loader mode, so 4-button monty was probably unnecessary. If I were to try again I would wait for the C2 utility to hang. Then unplug the PM3, restart C2 Utility, select update->pm3 and then plug the pm3 back in.

Unclear to me whether either Windows 11 or the USBC adapter caused a problem. Windows always tries to install drivers and the like so maybe it messed something up. Maybe having the C2 utility ready and waiting circumvented that.

PM3 uses a smart card, so you don't lose anything. Not sure what happens to your data on a PM5 if you reset it.
