Noise during hard pull
Noise during hard pull
On a hard pull I get a clunking sound. The machine only has been rowed 97,000 meters - basically new. I bought it brand new and it has sat for 10 years. Here is a link to the video of what it is doing. https://youtu.be/FIIXkKusfUk
Re: Noise during hard pull
Anything strange in the chain resistance ? Was the chain slipping under load? Chain slip looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGGwDUZ5BAY
Assuming it's just a chain hitting plastic sound, and the chain is not slipping then split the rower and flip over the flywheel half and see if the plastic cover on the bottom of the rail is hitting the chain. The section from the footstretchers to the flywheel on the bottom may have gotten pushed in during storage. The plastic piece is called the "return mechanism cover" in the first few seconds of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeC7NLcGnFw

It feels like it is skipping teeth, jerky
Re: Noise during hard pull
bummer.
Try this first: fix for sticking chain links. https://www.concept2.com/service/indoor ... n-problems "..Chain Problems Symptom The chain is skipping or running roughly. Resolution 1 If caused by stiff links in the chain you should clean and lubricate the chain." https://www.concept2.com/files/pdf/us/i ... cation.pdf
If its not the chain then the lube in the clutch may have dried out (or gravity pooled after sitting unmoving for 10 years) and caused the clutch to fail to engage. Try some 3-in-one oil on the clutch to see if that frees it up. Look at 13:40 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUj80NH9Dgc&t=820s Or maybe try a hair dryer to warm the bearing up up a bit and see if you can get it consistently working. There was a thread where oiling worked recently, but I can't find it. (I thought bearing slip fails were silent so maybe you just have sticking links on your chain).
The real hardware experts (I'm not) need to weigh in. Some of the usual HW experts are in this thread. viewtopic.php?t=164259 Could mean a new flywheel assembly for around $85 plus your time to install if the chain fix and oiling the bearing does not get it working.
Also, it is a 10 year old rower, but concept2 support usually doesn't care how old things are. They will help you if you give them a call or send them a note.

Re: Noise during hard pull
the chain seems to have a very very very slight twist to it in one spot

Compilation of pertinent threads is helpful. Missing is reference to a procedure for freeing the clutch bearing needles endorsed by ‘c2Jon’ Wilson (long time Concept 2 employee, now retired, who has reason to know), in which the original grease lube is dissolved and flushed from the bearing bore by liberal application of kerosene prior to relubing with a low viscosity oil. Should be done with flywheel removed from axle and placed on rags or absorbent waste to catch excess kero and lube.Tsnor wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2022, 5:12 pmbummer.

TY, I was looking for something exactly like this (for OP and selfishly for me so I would know how to do it).jackarabit wrote: ↑January 4th, 2022, 12:33 pmCompilation of pertinent threads is helpful. If it turns out to be bearing frozen for OP this is what to try -- his bearings have no wear at all so getting lube to work should fix.
Thinking from the OP's "chain seems to have a very very very slight twist to it in one spot" that root cause for him is chain links that need some oil and some work/movement, and that the noise is the chain riding up on the sprocket then snapping back in as he rows past the bad spot.

I just ordered the chain kit and will replace - I am a replacement artist
