Brand New Concept 2 Model D - Question

Post by RowRowYourBoat » June 4th, 2021, 2:21 pm

Hello all,

This week I received my Concept 2 model D rower after weeks of being on the wait list.

Upon opening the box and checking over the rower as instructed I found a slight gouge/chip and scratches from where the two parts of rower connect. I have tired to attach a photo to show this but no matter what I do It allow me due to file size is too large, I suspect I don’t have the permissions to do so. If anyone knows how to change this please let me know. A photo to this post would make help!

I have spoken to concept 2 and they have been great. They have offered to send a new machine out to me or offered me 5% discount. Considering once the main body of the rower is connected to the mono rail you can’t see the marks or the chip which is bare metal, I’m tempted to just live with it. My question is does this area where you connect and disconnect the rower when you store it, does the paint work get chipped to bare metal and marked over time?

Cheers

Post photos on https://imgur.com post Imgur links on here.

Have you contacted Concept2 (or your country dealership) about the problem?

Hi, Our boathouse has dozens of ergs. They only rarely get broken into two pieces (maybe 10 times/year), but get used by high school racing teams who beat on them. I've never seen chipped paint or any signs of rust. No bare metal. Some of the ergs are really old with pm2 and pm3 monitors.

Suggest you also post asking best way to paint over the chip / scratches. Several people on this board are experts at refurbishing C2 rowers, and will know the best approach.

Very simple and reliable photo hosting site. If the KD joint joins and parts without interference and evidences no deformation and/or attempt to correct deformation, take the discount and touch it up. If you suspect significant damage, box it up and take the replacement.

To answer your specific question, I've put nearly 5 million meters on my Model D over the past two years and have not found it to be easily susceptible to cosmetic damage. That said, it doesn't really get "put away;" it's moved occasionally for room-cleaning or just because I want it to be somewhere else for a while.
You may want to consider a couple of factors in your decision: (1) Are you committed to keeping your C2 for life, or do you think you might sell it some day? (2) Is it usually "on display" in your home where others see it on a regular basis, or is it in an off-limits space?
When I was a bike rider, many of my generation (old...) would keep their war-ravaged bikes in full-view in their living spaces, both out of affection and as a badge of honor.

Just my opinion here, but as you were seeking a few, I’d say that it’s decent of C2 to offer you options and the real decision comes down to what matters for you. For me, a few scratches in a out of the way place are inconsequential to what it is (a exercise/workout machine) and I’d take the discount they’re offering, buy some additional fitness gear, and forget about it. If is was a big, egregious gouge I might get a replacement, but otherwise I’d thank them for being a cool company, add some needed gear, and get to rowing! :D

The scratched part is aluminum so corrosion isn't an issue. I'd touch it with a black Magic Marker and inspect the mating area of the monorail for something imbedded in the plastic or some other protrusion. The machines are matched together for test rowing and then packaged as a set, so the scratch might have occurred then, or was missed by QC during assembly. Enjoy the rowing!
