C2 model C - did I get a good deal?

Post by Kid B » October 7th, 2019, 3:35 pm

Just bought a used Concept2 model C with a PM2. lifetime meters: 1,992,000. Paid $200 and everything works well—even the monitor. Did I get a good deal?

Apart from the PM2 being obsolete, you've probably saved enough to retrofit a PM5.

Bargain, they are still selling for NZ$900 over here so thats about 450 pounds or USD$600.

As long as there is no visible white/green powder corrosion in the battery compartment and the battery terminals are not rusty the PM2 in still a great monitor, all it really lacks is connectivity to other devices like a PC your phone.

I think you got a very good deal, even if you have to spend a few bucks to replace some parts.

If I were you I'd stick with the PM2 for now. If you find that you're really getting a lot out of the erg and want more data about your workouts or some of the fancier options or functions the newer PMs can do, then you can upgrade and still come out ahead.

Thanks all! I think keeping with the PM2 for a while is a good idea. I'm a marathon runner who usually puts in between 60-80 miles per week, but after my peak race in December I'll incorporate more rowing into the routine. Very excited to have found this good deal.

You got a very good deal. I have sold a model B or two in the past for over $200. Used C's usually sell for $400 and up in my area. Use it well!!!!

This information was extremely helpful. What would be the maximum price to expect topay for a Model C/PM2? Is 500 too much? As a comparison, for the used market in my area, I've seen the Model D/PM3 range between 700 (rare) - 850 (common).

It depends whether you've got a long roadtrip to collect it.

$500 seems too high for a twenty year old rower with an obsolete PM2 (which you will want to replace for a $150 PM5).

Start the bidding at half that number.

I do lots of erg work in the south jersey area (USA). As stated going rate for a decent Model "C" with a PM2 around $400, with the PM3 upgrade (which most of the ones I come across have) $500. Of course now the PM5 would be your only new upgrade option. Model "D"s start at $600 and will go for $800. Don't be too quick to discard the wooden handle. I've found it is great for longer rows, in particular 1/2 marathons and up. I think the greater diameter keeps the skin from bunching up. I always check the battery compartment for green corrosion when evaluating an erg for purchase; that's a sure sign the monitor may not have much life left in it. As Dougie said, go low. The "C" is by definition a 20yr old machine.
