Squeaking after 20k meters

Post by IdahoMike » February 26th, 2018, 11:51 pm

Just got a brand new model D. I only have 20k meters on it and today I noticed a squeaking noise when I started rowing. I put some 3 in 1 oil on the chain before today’s session but it’s still there. Here is a video of the noise. Thoughts?

Check the screws on the seat are still tight.

The other source is the chain rollers inside the frame, but you have very low meters for this to happen. They are dry assembled in the factory but benefit from a couple of drops of 3 in 1 oil on the plain bearing.

Just watched the Vid, actually that doesn't sound good I would call Concept 2 for support.

Get someone else to try and locate the noise source while you row.

Flip it on its nose, slide out the cover and check the routing of the shock cord, sounds like its rubbing on something or even come off its rollers somehow.

Thanks Carl. I should’ve specified, I know it’s hard to tell with the video but the noise is coming from the chain pulling mechanism.

In this case, active warranty is a consideration in deciding whether to go beyond finding the source of the problem. However ambitious or limited your troubleshooting aspirations, before opening up the patient, see links below for schematics of what the chain path and chain return shock cord path should be:

With reference to the chain return bungee routing, make certain your view of the guts in the tunnel matches the pov of the schematic, particularly in terms of handedness. If it’s as simple as the bungee off one of the idler pulleys and riding on the pulley shaft, put it right and see if the squeak is gone.

If it's still rubbing / squeaking / playing some other tune after 40K then you should pick up the phone and call Concept2.

Sounds pretty bad in the video, the chain and the new "Quiet sprocket" is just that when new, the only sound of significance should be the air passing through the flywheel when rowing hard. Even then its a Woosh sound not a rubbing sound.

Im thinking maybe even a flywheel weight has come off and has stuck to the magnet on the flywheel.

If you remove the flywheel and pull the chain to see if the noise has gone and check inside the cage or the flywheel for something rubbing.

Would not keep rowing on it something is wrong.

What I’ve seen on the magnetic band on the flywheel is machining swarf. If the flywheel threw a wgt. and it somehow stuck to the magnet, should be visible thru the tach sensor window in the LH half of the shroud by removing sensor and rotating flywheel. Got to be careful of the sensor cable here (again consult schematics and ass/disass instructions in C2 pdfs) b4u try. Which brings us to whether the flywheel exhibits an out of balance shaking or vibration? If it don’t, not likely a thrown wheelwhgt.

Pull the flywheel, you need to learn how to do it anyway if you want to clean it properly and add a tiny spot of thin grease to the bearing.

Its just a process of elimination, if the noise is still present then its from something inside the frame.

Then get someone to pull the handle while you observe what is going on inside the frame.

The Rower is really quite simple from a mechanical point of view, have worked on things 10 times harder to repair and service.

Completely stripped and rebuilt a Model D1 in about 4 hours.
