Anyone using a PM1 that could answer a question?
Anyone using a PM1 that could answer a question?
I have model B with a PM1 and when I row sometimes my strokes per minute jumps all over the place...as in sometimes it'll read 76 spm...Now I know one can row at a fairly high rate but I know that I am not moving anywhere near that fast. Is this a common issue with the PM1? Is mine malfunctioning or do I need a new pickup wire?

Did you reset it properly as per the instructions on the end of it ? Hold down the reset and the up arrow key then release the reset then the up arrow key.
They also need Silver Oxide batteries like the 303 or 357 or SR44 batteries. Don't put Alkaline batteries in them as the screen contrast suffers.
The pickup wire is just a 105 Ohm coil of wire and it can be checked with a multimeter.

I did the reset as per the instruction manual and it's using fresh 357 batteries...pretty sure they're silver oxide. The contrast on the monitor is actual fine. It's clear as day with the new batteries its just the spm shows a pretty accurate rate most of the time but occasionally jumps to some unbelievable high rate. This usually isn't a problem as it'll. Usually jump back to the correct spm but sometimes it happens right at the end of a rowing session so it throws my numbers all off.

I don't have one anymore, but I used a PM1 for many years and don't recall ever seeing that happen (and I would have noticed if it was happening). I would guess your unit is defective if that is all that is getting messed up. A defective pickup/wire would seemingly affect more than just strokes per minute, and would likely make your numbers lower, not higher.
