Intermittent clanking after shock cord replacement.

Post by Tees Erg Fairy » December 10th, 2016, 3:24 pm

Hi all,

I've recently changed the shock cords on two of our rowing club machines, one a Model C, the other an original D. Both definitely have the shock cord routed correctly, but make the kind of clanking noise at start of the drive usually created by a mis-routing issue....BUT....they both only do it intermittently and look fine on inspection - the C is doing it more often than the D, just for a few strokes at a time then they go quiet again.

The ergs are kept in an unheated boathouse gym, and the weather has got a good few degrees milder than when I did the original cord change. Is it possible the shock cords simply need re-adjusting? Or is there something else that might be the answer?

Thanks!

have you checked the ends of the shock cord that stick out past where they're locked into the metal ends are not interfering with anything?

I think the ones on mine were a little bit when I was inspecting the inside of my machine.

One of them was catching something just enough to cause a little sticky spot in the movement.

Have you tried hitting the lock system with a heavy hammer? I usually see it move if it was slack.

Under the rail at the join there's an eccentric half disc, which when tightened locks the two parts of the machine together. If it's slack, I hear a click at every catch.

The original model D has the eccentric in the frame lock. The mechanism and operation of the frame lock of the earlier model C resembles that of the "revised" model D without the rotating wedge. OP has both a C and an "original" D at his gym. So one machine (the original design model D) has the rotating wedge and the other (the C) does not. There might be a common cause for the noise in both machines but it will not hinge on (pun) the snugging up of a rotating wedge in a model C which doesn't have one.
