New Machine

Post by jamesg » October 21st, 2015, 5:01 am

Thinking of getting a new one. I've a C+PM3 about 2001 and happy despite the occasional spikes in the bar chart; will probably opt for the current D+PM5 but I have used Dynamics that have a similar feel to a 1x. So interested to hear if any maintenance problems can arise on this version.

Depends on if you have the money to spend or not.

You can essentially turn the C into a D by fitting a quiet kit which is a new chain and a Model D sprocket and shaft and a couple of soft chain guide rollers. You already have a PM3 anyway.

Depends on what kind of condition you Model C is in, if you maintained it and are a bit mechanically minded and have an imperial set of tools (the Americans didn't go metric) then a strip clean and rebuild with perhaps also a new shock cord it will feel like a new machine.

There are no known issues with the Model D now, early versions had a frame cracking problem but if you buy new then no issues.

The only thing I changed was a move to sealed seat roller bearings and also I replaced the foot stretcher screws when I discovered they were not stainless steel. I sweat a lot so the more stainless steel the better, everything else just rusts, sweat is highly corrosive.

Thanks for your answer; sorry I wasn't clear. I'd prefer the Dynamic but have heard nothing about it's reliability. There's more to go wrong on the Dynamic it seems, looking at fotos.

Either the population with dynamics don't get many problems, or the population doesn't post on here or the population is too tiny. The only poster with a dynamic is Bob Spenger.

Why not pick up the phone and call your local C2 dealership?

I meant to reply a long time ago but thought someone else would first. After 6 million meters I am installing the third drive cord. Also the bungee that centers the seat needs replacement but now that my technique has improved my hips and seat dont move much.

One thing about replacing the drive cord on an older dynamic. Be sure you have a 6 lobe screwdriver before you cut the old cord. You would think C2 would have warned you about that in the instructions. Now I do not have a functional dynamic erg until I can get a 6 lobe screwdriver because I cut the old cord.

Reminds me of the joke about the instructions for defusing a mine:

Remove locknut B.

Be sure to pull cotter pin A first or an explosion may result.

Thanks. I like the idea of the Dy very much, more than slides because of the smaller moving machine mass, but had though the cord might be critical. There's no six-lobe screwdriver in my toolbox either, and if there were it'd be the wrong size.

I have a dynamic with 2.5 million meters on it. No problems so far. My drive cord is starting to look a little fuzzy, but still is nowhere near the "Replace" picture on the machine. This is still the original cord.
