Ant+ Android App for PM4

Hey guys,

Brand new to the forum, and to Concept2 Rowers. Just purchased a Model E.

Tried to find the answers the last few days via the forum and Google, but couldn't come up with the answers.

I've noticed a few Android (and Apple) apps, that can be used with the PM3/4, but they all seem to require a USB OTG cable connected to the PM3/4. Seeing I have a Model E, which has inbuilt ANT+, and also an ANT+ compatible device (Samsung Galaxy Note 3), was just wondering if you knew of any Android Apps that supported this feature. And if not, why isn't this an option? Am I missing something?

As far as I'm aware, my device should be able to read info via ANT+ from the PM4. I have also updated my firmware to 118.

It's not possible with the current version of firmware and the current Android App.
I'd suggest an email aimed at ScottH [at] Concept2 [dot] com would be your best bet.

So, what you're saying, is that hardware wise, it is possible, but the software/firmware isn't there yet?

I'll email Scott, and try and get some more info out of him anyways.

This is an excerpt out of the email response from Scott from Concept2;

"The PM4 can certainly talk to them if software was written for it. We felt that spending a lot of time adding ANT+ to ErgData for Android was not cost effective for a number of reasons: Only supports PM4, some Android phones don't have ANT built in, no effective add on ANT Dongle like the Wahoo.

I think that a few developers may be working on ANT+ apps for Android, but I cannot make promises on their behalf."

So I guess the question is now, are there any developers actually working on ANT+ for their apps? I still kind of find it weird that Concept2 don't want to put the time and effort into such a feature. Putting ANT+ into the PM4 seems like a lot of work to use it just for heart rate information...

Not sure but i'm really impressed with the connectivity of my Garmin chest strap with the PM4. Man is it solid and reliable with no dropouts or range issues.

Surely the future is the PM5 with the Bluetooth and an Android App?

The PM4 is now gone and the PM3 must have outsold the PM4 by 10 to 1 anyway. With only the PM5 being available now its going to be the future.

PM5 with the Sony Android smart TV on the wall with and Android version of RowPro running on it and no cables thanks to Bluetooth, now were talking !
