30/30; Back to Back On C2 Dynamic & Model D

Post by Steve W » March 7th, 2015, 6:14 pm

Have had both for several weeks now. Bought both used but not used much (total of 8k on the Dynamic, more but still reasonable on the Model D. We've been enjoying them both for their strengths. Decided to set them up next to each other, setting drag on 125, and row 30 minutes each. Since 10k was my previous long row, I knew to start at a manageable pace. Goal was to go back-to-back 30 minutes on each machine. Distance would be one of the comparisons but only based on perceived exertion level guided by HR.

Model D first, settled into a natural SPM around 22. HR slowly climbed and was in the mid to high 130's at 30 minutes. Total distance = 6126m. Rowing curve was less smooth, no cliffs but some jagged edges. Obviously a newby but certainly trying to row smooth as seen in youtube video's and using the force curve on the PM.

Changed to Dynamic, SPM increased on average to around 26, about 4spm higher. The higher stroke rate felt no harder than 22 SPM on model D, just natural to that machine. In general, HR was in the same range but a little (as expected) cardiac drift to 142 bpm at the end. Again, just focused on technique & perceived exertion level and just letting distance land without aiming. Force curve was smoother & slightly longer. Total distance = 6123, a total of 3 meters less for 30 minutes.

Differences for me...Dynamic seemed 'easier' on my body. The perceived effort was not easier, it just seemed to reward technique with less punishment to my knees, hips & lower back. Workout was equal to the D, no harder & no easier. HR was in the same range as the D. The lack of sliding back & forth on the rail also seemed more gentle to my body overall, like getting the same workout but more gentle doing it. I also like that the Dynamic seems to reward technique. Seems like I have better technique on it due to this and it's rewarding to see a smoother force curve on it.

Model D seemed to reward leg muscle input more. If I were going for a timed race or distance, model D would be my go-to choice. I might 'feel it' more afterward but for myself, I think that slightly more distance can be covered when going for a 2k to 1 hour time. Beyond one hour, I might choose the Dynamic to be a little more gentle on this aging scrawny body. Either way, won't be breaking any records...The D is definitely quieter than the Dynamic which makes it 'sound' smoother. My wife likes the D better because of the lower noise level.

My primary activities are running & triathlons. Rowing seems like a good activity to compliment these or just on it's own. When we acquired the second rower, the plan was to determine which one we preferred & sell the other. Based on the strengths of each, looks like we may be the proud parents of both :) .

Very interesting Steve. I purchased my Model D back in June last year but prior to that I was considering the Dynamic. However, I was unable to find anything solid in the way of direct comparisons between the two machines at that time on the forums.

After watching a few videos featuring the Dynamic and having already had experience of the Model D, I opted for the D. One of the reasons was the increased noise levels from the Dynamic which I was sensitive to given I have upstairs neighbours. Plus, at the time, I was concerned about how comparable results would be using either machine. it does seem from your tests that the two machines are extremely close which is reassuring.

One thing that the D offered as an option in the future that also attracted me was the addition of slides to provide the feel of a Dynamic rower. I had used these on a Model D at my club and liked them so these units allow dynamic feel to the D which you may want to consider should you decide to sell the Dynamic.

If you haven't seen Concept 2 slides before then check out the following video:

I used the D on slides for a couple of years before I got my dynamic. I must say that I did prefer the D on slides, but had switched to the dynamic for its smaller foot print.

Hi Bob,

Curious as to why you prefer the D on slides over the Dynamic? I have the former now (with the Core Perform seat attached, which I really like) and am seriously considering switching to the Dynamic. Mostly due to the amount of space the slides take up (like you) and also to try something that's supposed to be more similar to rowing a single.

Anyway, been back and forth on selling my D and haven't pulled the trigger yet. Wish I could find a barely used Dynamic for sale somewhere!

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Kevin

I liked the feel of the stroke more on the D. I don't row on the water any more, so that is no longer a consideration. Space was the major factor for my own choice. Lately, I have been borrowing a grounded D for time trials, since my dynamic doesn't count for records. I just turned 90 and there are a lot of empty spots in the WR list and the listed records are also "low-hanging fruit."

Raoter, I had used a model d at a fitness facilty. Watching the local Craigslist for a used rower, a Dynamic popped up. Gentleman had bought it and over several months rowed a total of 8k. Rowing just was not his thing. Reading as much as possible in a short span, it seemed like an interesting idea. At worst, decided it could be re-sold if necessary (not necessary :D ). I jumped on it and still no regrets.

Curiosity got the best of me when a used model d was for sale on Craigslist. Now that we've acquired both, looks like slides aren't needed. If we had only a model c, d or e, I'd probably bite the bullet and put it on slides. I like the 'on-water feel'. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, Bob, and may I say...you're my hero!! Happy 90th birthday, keep rowing, you are an inspiration for all of us!
