PM2+ Screen not working, troubleshooting guide failed

Post by MediumRare » September 29th, 2014, 8:33 am

My PM2 appeared dead. I did the four button reset, but nothing. Then - the screen came up. I did the display/reset and all the digits showed. Then it faded to E011 and then nothing.

What the heck is going on!?

It's most likely due to previous battery leakage. There's very little value in trying to repair twenty year old electronics.

So put your hand in your pocket and buy a PM3, PM4 or PM5 for your ergo.

Since the screen showed all its digiits, is the problem more likely to be the thingy that generates the voltage when I row? I don't want to buy a new PM and then find it was the thingy!

If you can find another erg, you can try your monitor on that, and see if the problem is with the monitor, or with the feed from the erg to the monitor. You just have to unplug the cable from the monitor on the erg you're using for testing, and then insert the plug into your monitor. You don't even have to undo any bolts to do this test, and you can use a Model C, D or E for testing.

By doing this, you can see if your monitor is shot. If it is, I'd completely concur with Citroen that it makes more sense to buy a new monitor than to try to repair a PM2+ (you could even buy a PM5 once the retrofit kits become available in a month or so, which would make your Model C look very new).

Alternatively, if you don't have access to another erg, a new pickup kit for the PM2+ is less than 16 bucks. So, you could just order it, try it out, and if it doesn't work then you know it is the monitor that needs replacing. The PM2+ pickup kit is here:

There is also a PM2+ troubleshooting page here, in case you haven't seen it, although I think this is probably the guidance you refer to as having failed to help you:

and, in particular, tis page discusses the E011 error:

Its not the pickup so don't waste your money on that.

There is a chip inside that gerates a -3Vdc supply for the LCD to operate, chances are its faulty, however an E011 Error as well indicates a second fault. Yes I can repair them but if your in the USA then it is cheaper to buy a new PM5.

A replacement PM4 monitor for Model D is now available for $130 while a retrofit PM4 Monitor is now available for $150. Both come without the rechargeable battery which is available for $11.
