I just couldn't take the compression straps that came with the rower, with their slipping and digging in to my feet any more --

Did you ever try rowing with the straps just hanging loose? I have hardly ever used the straps on my ergs for the last few years.

Feet never chafed by the straps but the worn buckles on gym machines drive me crazy! They spend a small fortune on a couple of Woodway manual treadmills but won't spend $2.11 on a replacement strap. Interesting that these have the pivoting cradle to carry the SPD mech and the shoe, which I assume is a cycling shoe with a rigid, molded sole.
